About the role

The Automotive Commercial Underwriter completes financial analysis for floorplan acquisitions and other associated commercial lending, including real estate. Responsibilities include clear communication of risks and recommended mitigation strategies, consulting with SFS Legal to protect SFS interests, maintenance of UCC filings, and review of loan documentation prior to funding.

Responsibilities

  • Underwrite commercial loan requests by analyzing the financial condition of dealerships via financial statements, tax returns, CPA statements, general ledgers, trial balances, account schedules, bank statements, or any other necessary documentation.
  • Ensure appropriate security (guarantees, collateralization) is recommended per both the risk profile and ownership structure of the dealership.
  • Direct package decisioning to the appropriate authority level per SFS policy.
  • Present and communicate package details as required by that authority level, including recommendations.
  • Own UCC filing process, ensuring legal security matches that defined in the credit package.
  • Provide timely and clear communication with key stakeholders throughout the underwriting process.
  • Obtain answers to questions regarding financials, line amounts, loan structure, or any other relevant facets of the loan.
  • Maintain customer focus throughout the underwriting process, ensuring no shortcuts and awareness of timing and relevance of requests to dealers.
  • Conduct final review of loan documentation and take-over audit prior to loan funding.
  • Perform periodic account reviews and maintenance.
  • Perform other ad hoc duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Minimum 5 years’ experience in automotive financial services.
  • Minimum 2 years’ automotive commercial underwriting experience.
  • Bachelor’s degree in business administration, finance, or related field.
  • Excellent understanding of dealership entity legal ownership structure and clear, concise explanation of those structures.
  • Strong knowledge of cash flow analysis, pro forma forecasting, and scaling.
  • Strong written and oral communication, problem-solving, critical thinking, teamwork, and time management abilities.
  • Good interpersonal and customer service skills.
  • Proficient Microsoft Office skills in Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.
  • Experience in commercial risk management and/or commercial lending.
  • Extensive experience interacting with dealers preferred.
  • Knowledge of web-based tools such as DataScan, Docusign, Salesforce, credit reporting, OFAC, and customer due diligence products preferred.

Physical Demands

  • Regularly required to sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; and talk or hear.
  • Occasionally required to stand, walk, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.
  • Must occasionally lift and/or move up to 10 pounds.
  • Specific vision abilities required include close vision.

Work Environment

  • The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.

Schedule

  • Typically between the hours of 8 AM–6 PM, Monday through Friday, with occasional weekends as needed.
  • Travel is required 10% of the time.
