Automation Engineer III

About the role

The Automation Engineer III designs, implements, and supports automation and process control systems for new installations, modifications, and customer support, primarily on-site at customer facilities. This role may involve mentoring and training other team members and assisting project managers with scope definition and work planning.

All Automation Engineers participate in an after-hours on-call rotation schedule.

Requirements

• Associate Degree in Automated Manufacturing, Electro-Mechanical Technology, or EET or 8 years of advanced PLC/HMI/SCADA programming and system startup experience
• Valid state driver’s license and satisfactory driving record
• Travel: 25-50%

Schedule

This position works between the hours of 6 AM and 6 PM, Monday–Friday. Schedule may vary and can include nights, weekends, and holidays.

Responsibilities

• Methodically approach process startups
• Demonstrate strong leadership skills
• Work independently; assess and troubleshoot service needs under stressful conditions
• Resolve complex or intermittent system issues that less senior engineers have struggled with
• Provide direction and mentorship to less senior Automation Engineers
• Lead and contribute to team brainstorming activities to develop solutions or options
• Think creatively, share ideas, and establish the best path forward for the team and customer
• Work on advanced-level projects independently or with a team, collaborating with Systems Architects, Project Engineers, customers, and delegating tasks to other Automation Engineers
• Quality-check other Automation Engineers’ work for accuracy, functionality, and completeness
• Independently provide programming, commissioning support, and “own” the startup and project scope
• Mentor less experienced Automation Engineers or assist with conflict resolution in the field
• Provide quality control feedback to other Automation Engineers
• Support and contribute to code streamlining efforts and building a code library
• Encourage team buy-in for using and expanding Code Standards
• Actively participate in continued education efforts
• Perform other related duties as required and assigned

Skills

• Proficiency with PCs and Microsoft Office Suite
• Experience with PLC program development and HMI/SCADA development
