Additionally, this role involves creating conceptual drawings to support solutions architecture and sales teams, assisting the central engineering team in global strategic projects, and performing related duties as needed.

About the role

The Systems Designer works under the Hardware Engineering Manager, performing routine and complex technical duties in project design, implementation, and management of complex automation systems and technology integration. This includes providing detailed information and submittals to communicate design and operation to customers, consultants, subcontractors, and the field installation team. The role requires self-direction to prioritize tasks and maintain project documentation within budgeted timeframes.

Responsibilities

  • Read and interpret customer specification packages to determine design factors such as size, shape, construction materials, and functionality.
  • Work with the engineering team to create Mechanical and Electrical System models.
  • Develop layouts, detailed design drawings, and diagrams for Mechanical and Electrical Systems (e.g., enclosures, conduit, cabling, one-lines, building layouts).
  • Draft detailed multi-view drawings of parts, sub-assemblies, and installation details.
  • Ensure the accuracy and completeness of all drawings, BOMs, files, engineering records, and tasks for assigned projects.
  • Coordinate equipment manufacturer submittals for connection details and compatibility with design requirements.
  • Analyze designs and systems for compliance with applicable standards (e.g., OSHA, CE, or customer-specific requirements).
  • Review drawings for accuracy, material selection, proper machining techniques, finishes, and hardness.
  • Communicate all requested design changes to the Engineering Group Leader.
  • Adhere to all health and safety rules and procedures.
  • Communicate progress on tasks to the project engineer or manager.
  • Periodically supervise the system design effort on a project level, delegating tasks to a team.
  • Organize documentation, including quotes, drawing registers, correspondence, requisitions, drawings, and schedules for supervised projects.
  • Review electrical requirements with respect to input and output devices with electrical designers.
  • Review machine operations and sequences with programmers.
  • Assist fabricators, machinists, toolmakers, and electricians in debugging, integration, and resolving problems to complete systems.
  • Determine tools, fixtures, and equipment for fabrication and assembly of mechanical components and complete assemblies.
  • Select appropriate purchase components for system assemblies and create requisitions with appropriate delivery dates.

Requirements

  • A working knowledge of common mechanical and electrical systems in buildings.
  • A working knowledge of automation (P&ID) and monitoring systems.
  • Thorough knowledge of drafting principles.
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD and SolidWorks.
  • Ability to design systems from sketches or verbal concepts.
  • Capability to work as part of a team in a multi-location, remote environment.
  • Experience with virtual collaboration systems such as Microsoft Teams.
  • Thorough knowledge of electro-mechanical actuation and sensing devices.
  • Thorough knowledge of electrical devices (e.g., switches, sensors, transmitters, relays).
  • Strong ability to conceptualize and create solutions for complex design requirements.
  • Strong written and oral communication abilities.
  • Ability to independently complete responsibilities with minimal supervision.
  • Experience with low voltage installation practices.
  • Experience with Revit or similar BIM modeling systems.
  • Experience with physical network devices used in operational technology.
  • Experience managing others.
  • Experience with client-facing interactions and participating in solutions development.

Qualifications

  • Autodesk Inventor (2 years or equivalent combination of training and experience).
  • Drafting and drawing standards development knowledge.
  • Electrical/Mechanical aptitude.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office.
  • High attention to detail.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and priorities.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • BS in Mechanical/Electrical Technology or Engineering degree.
  • Autodesk AutoCAD Mechanical (5 years).
  • Autodesk AutoCAD Electrical (5 years).
  • Mechanical/Electrical System Design experience with expertise in an automation design environment (10 years of experience in designs utilizing pneumatics, valves, servos, mechanisms, etc.).
