About the role
The Automation Engineer 3, BMS/VDS provides support for the sitewide Building Management System (BMS) and Validated Data System (VDS). This includes implementation of changes to the utility and facility automation systems, updating design documents, executing testing, troubleshooting events, and providing on-call support. This role participates in and may lead projects and medium- to complex-level changes while coordinating with internal and external stakeholders.
Responsibilities
- Performs Automation activities, such as system administration, code configuration, document and software development, test execution, change control, maintaining system documentation, interacting with system vendors, and routine maintenance and upgrades
- Develops (generates, reviews, maintains) various specification documents (e.g., user requirements specification (URS), functional specification (FS), design qualification (DQ), etc.)
- Develops (generates, reviews, maintains) various test protocols and functional testing documents (e.g., installation qualification (IQ), operational qualification (OQ), etc.)
- Creates standard code utilizing complex control strategies
- Delivers accurate and on-time Automation work while maintaining Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) compliance aspects of validated systems
- Participates in audits with customer representatives and regulatory agencies, as needed
- Collaborates with other departments, such as Manufacturing, Maintenance, Instrumentation & Controls (I&C), and Validation
- Provides training, guidance, and presents information to the team or other stakeholders
- Serves as on-call support for Automation inquiries and troubleshooting
- Performs other duties, as assigned
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in chemical, electrical, mechanical engineering or other relevant field with 5 years of applicable industry experience (e.g., automation, I&C); or Master's degree in technical field of study relevant to automation or I&C with 3 years of applicable industry experience (e.g., automation, I&C)
- Effective communication, both written and oral
- Knowledge of GMP regulations
- Advanced problem-solving skills
- Ability to effectively present and explain knowledge of several Automation subject areas to internal partners
- Willingness to provide feedback to others, including leaders
- Ability to support 24/7 manufacturing facility, including on-call, as needed
Preferred experience
- Experience working in a GMP or other highly regulated environment
Working conditions & physical requirements
- Will work in environment which may necessitate respiratory protection.
- May work in Mechanical/Production spaces that may require hearing protection and enrollment in a hearing conservation program.
- Ability to discern audible cues.
- Ability to inspect or perform a task with 20/20 corrected vision, visual acuity, including distinguishing color.
- Ability to sit for prolonged periods of time (up to 240 minutes).
- Ability to conduct activities using repetitive motions that include wrists, hands and/or fingers.
- Ability to conduct work that includes moving objects up to 33 lbs.
- Ability to bend, push or pull, reach to retrieve materials from 18" to 60" in height, and use twisting motions.
