Automated Inspection & Converting Engineer
About the role
The Automated Inspection and Measurement group is responsible for fundamental technology development, application investigations, system integration and deployment, and long-term support across many 3M divisions in the areas of automated inspection, measurement, machine vision, automation, and process data systems. This group is a leader in digital technology within the corporation through its technology development and breadth of system deployment across 3M manufacturing operations.
Responsibilities
- Integrate and commission smart converting systems, with primary focus on fully automated slitters that ingest upstream inspection data for recipe management, cut planning, and dynamic control
- Design and develop automated inspection systems using expertise areas such as optics, image processing, and AI
- Work within a team setting to solve manufacturing challenges
- Support automated converting & inspection systems in a manufacturing environment, including travel to manufacturing locations and on-call support of systems
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree or higher in Engineering (completed and verified prior to start)
- Two (2) years of experience in either Process Engineering role, vision technology role, or converting technology role in a private, public, government or military environment
- Possess expertise equivalent to that which would be obtained in a master’s degree or higher in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Computer Science, Physics, or Engineering field
- Experience in converting technology, including roll good slitting and automated slitting
- Experience in process engineering within a manufacturing or industrial setting
- Five (5) years of professional experience implementing automated inspection, machine vision, or automated converting/slitting systems
- Image processing, signal processing, optics, software, or electronics experience
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, excellent networking skills, exceptional interpersonal and leadership skills
Qualifications

Pay & Benefits
The expected compensation range for this position is $124,127 - $151,710, which includes base pay plus variable incentive pay, if eligible. This range represents a good faith estimate for this position. The specific compensation offered to a candidate may vary based on factors including, but not limited to, the candidate’s relevant knowledge, training, skills, work location, and/or experience. In addition, this position may be eligible for a range of benefits (e.g., Medical, Dental & Vision, Health Savings Accounts, Health Care & Dependent Care Flexible Spending Accounts, Disability Benefits, Life Insurance, Voluntary Benefits, Paid Absences and Retirement Benefits, etc.).
Schedule
Onsite at 3M Center, Maplewood, MNTypically 40 hours per week, with flexibility for travel to manufacturing locations as needed
