About the role
The position performs specialized equipment operation to assist with department operations and ensures equipment is safe for the road by providing maintenance, diagnosis, and repair of vehicles and equipment.
Responsibilities
- Fabricate, including cutting, grinding, torching, and welding to repair metal objects due to damage or corrosion.
- Maintain parts and tool inventory, notify superintendent of additional needs for approval to purchase.
- Aid in training other Public Works employees in equipment operation.

- Maintain cleanliness of shop and working order of shop equipment.
- Safely operates heavy and light construction equipment, machinery, and tools for maintenance and construction related operations.
- Forming, mixing, pouring, troweling and finishing concrete and masonry used in maintenance jobs.
- Performs installation and repair of street signs and the layout and painting of pavement striping and marking.
- Performs general road maintenance and related activities including flagging traffic, mowing, temporary and permanent asphalt surface repairs, patching holes, sawing pavement, concrete repair and pouring, clearing brush and trees, vegetation control, sweeping, routing and sealing road cracks, and removing dead animals and trash.
- Operates appropriate equipment and performs cement finishing, catch basin, and manhole repairs.
- Inspects and maintains assigned equipment; maintains equipment in clean and operating manner.
- Placing and removing cones and traffic barricades as warning devices to secure safety at work sites, directing traffic when necessary.
- Installs concrete form work for streets and sidewalks.
- Trims and cuts trees and shrubbery, removes tree trunks, operates high-lift, and shreds plant debris.
- Performs activities related to snow cleanup to include operating snowplow truck, spreading chemicals, and shoveling as assigned.
- Performs activities related to installation and clean up after special events, disasters, accidents, and other events.
- Sweeps and shovels debris and litter, moving heavy objects and loading into trucks.
- Pre and post work safety check of vehicle on a daily basis.
- Ensures all activities are carried out in a safe manner; adheres to all safety regulations; ensures all regulations pertaining to the safe use of equipment are understood and followed.
- Reports all accidents to the appropriate authority.
- Follows all policies for reporting.
- Completes work orders, daily activity reports, inspection reports, and time sheets; maintains maintenance and service records/logs, and other pertinent information.
- Provides backup assistance to other department personnel as needed.
- Reports to work for on-call after hours needs, as assigned.
Qualifications
- High School Diploma/equivalent.
- Technical certification/vocational diploma in automotive, heavy equipment or diesel repair preferred.
- A combination of education and experience that provides equivalent knowledge, skills and abilities may be considered.
- Class B CDL with air brakes endorsement.
Skills
- Knowledge of the standard methods, materials, tool and equipment of the automotive – mechanic trade.
- Knowledge of the principles of operation of gasoline and diesel driven equipment and of mechanical repair methods applicable to heavy trucks and construction equipment.
- Knowledge and understanding of hydraulic fluid power systems.
- Skill in the care and use of hand and machine tools employed in automotive repair work.
- Skill in locating and repairing defects in automotive equipment.
- Able to trouble shoot problems for proper and cost-effective repairs.
- Records maintenance expenditures.
- Knowledge of traffic safety principles.
- Ability to locate specific addresses.
- Knowledge of safe operations of heavy-duty trucks and equipment.
- Knowledge of basic mechanical and electrical equipment maintenance procedures.
- Ability and skill to drive and operate mobile equipment in a safe and proper manner.
- Knowledge of operation and maintenance of assigned equipment and machinery.
- Knowledge of utility markings and clearances and rules for safe equipment operation in close proximity to underground and overhead utility facilities.
- Knowledge of construction industry safety rules and ability to utilize all Personal Protective Equipment necessary.
- Knowledge of legal load limits for assigned equipment and vehicles.
- Ability to operate assigned machinery and equipment skillfully and safely in close proximity to vehicular traffic, grade and alignment stakes, slopes, trucks, other construction equipment, laborers Mechanic/Operator 3or and utilities.
- Able to read and understand grade and alignment stakes set by others.
- Ability to safely load, unload, and transport equipment to and from job sites.
- Knowledge of Personal Protective Equipment.
- Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
- Skill in organizational and time management to prioritize duties to accomplish a high volume of work product while adapting to constant changes in priority.
- Ability to understand and effectively carry out local policies and procedures; written instructions, general correspondence, and Federal, State, and local regulations.
- Ability to perform detailed work accurately and independently in compliance with stringent time limits with minimal direction and supervision.
- Ability to prepare and maintain accurate and concise records and reports consistent with the position.
