This position is located in the DEA, Inspection Division, Office of Inspections, Inspection Support Section (INS), Audit Unit (INSA).

About the role

Serves as a senior Auditor responsible for conducting and completing Performance, Financial, and Attestation Audit assignments throughout the DEA.

Responsibilities

  • Perform objective analysis and systematic evaluation assignments to provide independent assessments of DEA organizations, programs, activities, and functions by conducting complete or segments of audits, special reviews, and onsite inspections.
  • Develop and/or participate in proposals for audits, surveys, special reviews, programs, functions, and systems.
  • Plan, conduct, and report on audits and special reviews of financial programs, integrated financial operations, and other financial information for DEA organizations, programs, activities, and functions.
  • Develop audit approaches and formulate plans for work assignments.
  • Develop working papers and prepare or assess findings for consolidation into the final audit report.
  • Perform complex analysis and evaluations related to accounting, management control, and risk management.
  • Conduct research in preparation for audits, special reviews, and onsite inspections, including laws, directives, regulations, contracts, and agreements.
  • Analyze data, draw conclusions, recommend corrective actions, and exploit data from financial data retrieval systems.
  • Work as an audit team member to ensure the overall project is accomplished.

Requirements

Qualifications

Applicants must meet the required qualification requirements by the closing date of the announcement. If qualifying based on education, you must submit a copy of your college transcripts.

Basic Qualification Requirements

  • Completion of all requirements for a bachelor's degree in accounting from an accredited college or university; or
  • A degree in a related field such as business administration, finance, or public administration that included or was supplemented by 24 semester hours in accounting (up to 6 hours may be in business law); or
  • Combination of education and experience: at least 4 years of experience in accounting, or an equivalent combination of accounting experience, college-level education, and training that provided professional accounting knowledge. Your background must also include one of the following:
    • Twenty-four semester hours in accounting or auditing courses (up to 6 hours may be in business law);
    • A certificate as Certified Public Accountant or Certified Internal Auditor, obtained through written examination; or
    • Completion of requirements for a degree that included substantial course work in accounting or auditing (e.g., 15 semester hours), provided:
      • You have successfully worked at the full-performance level in accounting, auditing, or a related field;
      • A panel of at least two higher-level professional accountants or auditors has determined your knowledge of accounting and related fields equals that of a 4-year degree in accounting; and
      • Your education, training, and experience fully meet the specified requirements except for the 24-semester-hour requirement.

Grade-Specific Requirements

  • GS-12: At least one full year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-11 grade level, including:
    • Performing practices, methods, and techniques of accounting and auditing to independently conduct audits, special reviews, or onsite inspections; and
    • Conducting research for audits, special reviews, and onsite inspections, including laws, directives, regulations, contracts, and agreements.
  • GS-13: At least one full year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-12 grade level, including:
    • Applying theory, concepts, and practices of accounting and auditing to ensure quality work when conducting audit reviews;
    • Analyzing data, drawing conclusions, recommending corrective actions, and analyzing data from financial data retrieval systems; and
    • Working as an audit team member to ensure the overall project is accomplished.

Specialized experience includes paid and unpaid experience, such as volunteer work through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations.
