About ASCAP

The American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers (ASCAP) is a membership association of over one million songwriters, composers, and music publishers. It represents some of the world’s most talented music creators and operates on a not-for-profit basis. ASCAP licenses a repertory of over 20 million musical works to hundreds of thousands of businesses, including streaming services, cable television, radio, and satellite radio. ASCAP collects licensing fees, identifies, matches, and processes trillions of performances annually, and returns nearly 90 cents of every dollar back to its members as royalties. ASCAP advocates for music creators' rights and drives industry innovation.

Job Overview

As an Auditor for the Licensing department, you will be responsible for scheduling and conducting audits of ASCAP licensees to ensure compliance with licensing agreements and accurate reporting. You will audit a wide range of businesses, including radio stations, hotels, theme parks, cable companies, and streaming services. These audits contribute to additional revenue for ASCAP members, ensuring that songwriters are fairly compensated for their work. The role reports to the Senior Director, License Auditing and is a hybrid position with a 3-day in-office requirement based in ASCAP's New York Office.

  • Develop a deep understanding of ASCAP’s various licensing agreements.
  • Schedule and conduct audits of licensees in accordance with departmental policies and guidelines.
  • Perform pre-audit tasks and contact licensees to request records required for audits.
  • Prepare audit work papers, adjustments, and reports, ensuring findings and conclusions are documented clearly, thoroughly, and in a timely manner.
  • Identify root causes of audit findings (e.g., misclassification, calculation errors, missing data).
  • Collaborate with internal ASCAP teams (e.g., Legal, Sales, Finance) to explain audit findings and resolve issues as necessary.

Qualifications & Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting or finance.
  • 3+ years of experience in a public accounting firm or audit function within a global Financial Services firm or Media & Entertainment company.
  • Ability to interpret and analyze data, trace calculations to source documentation, and maintain accuracy.
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to interact professionally.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage time effectively and work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Experience auditing contracts or working with licensing agreements (music, publishing, technology licensing, IP licensing, or similar).
  • Proven ability to multitask, assess and shift priorities around as needed.
  • Proficiency with Excel (advanced formulas, pivot tables, lookups) and comfortable learning internal systems/tools.
  • Commitment to attention to detail, organized work product, and meeting deadlines.

Compensation/Benefits

ASCAP offers a unique and dynamic work environment with comprehensive and flexible benefit options. These include:

  • Network-only provider medical and dental plans or more flexible plans with in and out-of-network options.
  • Vision plan with in and out-of-network provider options.
  • 401(k) Plan with pre-tax, Roth, and after-tax contributions, including a company match.
  • Discretionary profit share contribution.
  • Gross time-off policy.
  • Health care and dependent care flexible spending accounts.
  • Short-term and long-term disability insurance.

  • Employee gym discounts.
  • Voluntary pet health insurance.

  • Voluntary employee, spouse, and dependent life insurance options.
  • Voluntary ID protection coverage.
Occasional travel for in-person meetings may be required. The anticipated base salary range for this position is $70,000 to $80,000, determined on an individualized basis based on factors such as geographic location, skills, education, and prior relevant experience. ASCAP is an equal opportunity employer.
