About the role

Are you passionate about working to equitably represent communities in news coverage and engaging with real people to help shape stories? The Audience Producer will create content to grow, diversify and engage local and regional audiences on all of KERA’s platforms with a focus on digital. This includes our websites, on-demand audio, email, and social media platforms.

Reporting to the Audience Editor, the producer will be a member of the newsroom audience engagement team helping to curate and produce news content for digital platforms and determine the best ways to connect with our audiences. The position will also include original reporting for online and radio. This person will help newsroom colleagues package their reporting for specific audiences, as well as report and produce original content to help bring digital innovation to stories that cover important issues affecting communities in North Texas and across the state. They will play a key role in newsroom engagement initiatives on various platforms, including user-generated content, social listening, and events. This producer will help bring new voices and perspectives into our coverage and will be an integral part of KERA’s efforts to grow as a news organization that represents the North Texas community.

This position is full-time, will be assigned a shift 1-2 hours outside the typical workday and will be expected to work some weekends. This position is classified as FLSA non-exempt, is eligible for overtime and reports to the Audience Editor, KERA News.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as part of the newsroom audience team helping to fill daily production requirements, building and copyediting web stories and crafting content and video for the newsroom’s social media, on-demand audio and email products
  • Produce and co-report stories focused on digital storytelling and engagement
  • Develop and execute engagement initiatives, special projects on digital and legacy platforms and at events
  • Focus storytelling and engagement initiatives on building audiences and sources in marginalized communities
  • Respond to breaking news events and get information out to audiences quickly on multiple platforms
  • Work in a manner that is consistent with KERA’s mission, vision and values; and maintain compliance with all company policies and procedures
  • Participate in fundraising activities as needed and assigned
  • Perform additional duties as assigned

Requirements

  • Highly organized and detail-oriented self-starter with a passion for journalism and relevant experience
  • Knowledge of Associated Press style, ability to exercise sound news judgment and follow KERA/NPR editorial standards
  • Excellent research, writing, producing and reporting skills with a passion for pursuing innovation and a commitment to diversity in digital news
  • Experience with multimedia production, photography, video and content management systems
  • Applying best practices for creating content on various email and social media platforms
  • Eagerness to explore and develop innovative digital, social and video skills
  • Works well in a team environment with agility to shift modes quickly and nimbly
  • Reliable transportation required for assignments/activities that involve work outside of the office

Preferred Qualifications

  • Strong audio reporting and production skills, and comfort behind a microphone
  • Public radio experience; three or more years of professional journalism experience
  • Deep knowledge of the people, cultures, issues, and geography of North Texas
  • Proficiency or fluency in a second language such as Spanish

Pay

$60,000 - $68,000 annually, depending on experience

Schedule

This position will work out of our Dallas office at least 40% of the time (equivalent to 16 hours per week). Time in office requirements are subject to change based on the needs of KERA and/or the position.
