About the role

NYC-based non-profit organization is seeking Contract Attorneys for an ongoing remote opportunity supporting high-impact habeas and detention matters in New Jersey. The contract is anticipated to last 5+ months.

Responsibilities

• File and litigate habeas corpus petitions on behalf of clients detained out of state
• Conduct emergency legal research and draft filings under tight deadlines
• Interview and counsel clients and families with sensitivity to trauma and crisis
• Coordinate with local counsel, public defenders, and advocacy groups to gather supporting documentation
• Appear in court as needed
• Maintain detailed records of case activity and communications

Requirements

• Admission to NY or NJ federal court required
• Habeas corpus experience required

Pay

$125/hour

Schedule

Part-time schedule: approximately 15–30 hours/week at the candidate’s discretion. Fully remote aside from any required court appearances.
