Responsibilities
- Maintain awareness of regulatory and legislative actions affecting the Family of Companies and corporate affairs.
- Evaluate and respond to the impact of these actions on Farm Bureau Insurance and Michigan Farm Bureau.
- Create, monitor, and update company-wide compliance protocols to address emerging issues.
- Research and apply laws to specific business circumstances under the guidance of the Legal Department.
- Assist with handling or supervising outside legal counsel on various legal matters such as IP, real estate, contracts, litigation, insurance policy issues, legislation, campaign finance, member legal education, and others.
- Support Michigan Farm Bureau legislative counsel.
- Work with departments to develop best practices for compliance with insurance regulation and legislation.
- Respond to complaints and actions against the companies related to compliance.
- Participate in corporate projects requiring compliance expertise, including privacy, annuity suitability, document retention, electronic delivery of documents, electronic signatures, adverse action notifications, and cancellation requirements.
- Advise administrative staff on relevant laws and regulations.
Requirements
- Juris Doctorate degree from an ABA accredited law school.
- Admission to the State Bar of Michigan and good standing.
- No record of professional disciplinary action.
- High personal standards for confidentiality and sensitivity.
- Ability to establish trust and relationships with directors, management, and business associates.
Qualifications
- Two to four years of experience as a corporate or insurance attorney.
