About the role

This part-time, on-call position supports training events at Fort Pickett in Blackstone, VA, and other U.S. or foreign training sites. Role Players immerse themselves in scenarios, react dynamically to student actions, and help reinforce operational judgment in rural and urban environments.

Responsibilities

  • Stay within assigned training lane and remain “in role” throughout each exercise.
  • Follow all security rules for the assigned location and accurately portray assigned culture.
  • Participate in practical exercises and Field Training Exercises, including urban/mounted operations.
  • Engage students at the appropriate intensity, adjusting responses based on student performance.
  • Understand the intent, mechanics, and flow of each exercise and improvise when directed.
  • Simulate combat using blank ammunition, simunitions, paintball, pyrotechnics, and role-specific weapons, equipment, and vehicles.
  • Portray a wide variety of roles—hostile forces, ambushers, snipers, friendly forces, police, host-nation civilians, terrorists, etc.—and switch roles as exercise requirements change.
  • Undergo regular searches by students, including thorough pat-downs of all body areas.
  • Dress in costume appropriate to the assigned role and maintain punctual attendance.
  • Communicate professionally with co-workers, supervisors, and government personnel.

Requirements

  • Active and valid U.S. Driver’s License.
  • Ability to speak, read, and write English.
  • Familiarity with foreign cultures, especially Middle Eastern and African.
  • One year of experience as a Role Player preferred; improvisational or semi-scripted acting experience a plus.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a Public Trust security clearance.

Physical Demands

  • Work outdoors in tactical field conditions, including extreme heat, cold, humidity, wind, rain, sleet, snow, and uneven terrain.
  • Stand, walk, climb stairs, and remain active for long periods.
  • Lift and carry equipment up to 50 pounds.
  • Wear and operate in environments with pyrotechnics, blank-firing weapons, and other simulated combat elements.
  • Convey detailed spoken instructions accurately, loudly, and quickly.

Schedule

Part-time, on-call; hours vary based on training needs and may include evenings, weekends, and up to 25% travel to other training sites.

Pay

$25.00 – $35.00 per hour, negotiable based on education and experience.
