Atmospheric/Ocean Scientist

About the role

This position supports the National Data Buoy Center (NDBC), a division of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) National Weather Service (NWS). NDBC operates a global network of data-collecting buoys and coastal stations, focusing on meteorological and oceanographic observations.

Responsibilities

• Supports the design, development, operation, and maintenance of the NDBC network.
• Analyzes meteorological and oceanographic observations, including winds, atmospheric pressure, temperatures, currents, and waves.
• Identifies and corrects observational errors in data collected by in-situ stations and satellites.
• Interprets and describes physical ocean data from in-situ observing stations and satellite observations.
• Understands the relationships between numerical atmospheric and ocean products and observational data.
• Uses Matlab and/or other scientific programming and analysis tools for data processing and analysis.
• Engages with customers to enhance their experience and improve service.
• Works collaboratively with colleagues to develop and implement quality control algorithms.

Requirements

• Master’s degree in Atmospheric Physical, Physical Oceanography, or related earth sciences.
• Ability to obtain a Public Trust security clearance.
• At least 2 years of experience analyzing meteorological and oceanographic observations.
• Experience with statistical analysis and machine learning techniques.
• Desired: Experience in physical oceanography with a focus on waves and currents, and technical writing skills.

• Must be well organized with a strong focus on detail.
• Excellent communication skills, both oral and written.

Skills

• Proficiency in Matlab and/or other scientific programming languages.
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

Pay

The salary range for this position is $60,000 - $90,000 annually, depending on experience and qualifications.

Schedule

The position is full-time and based at the John C. Stennis Space Center in southern Mississippi.
