About the role

The Athletic Coach instructs student athletes in fundamental skills, strategy, and physical training to achieve individual and team success. The role also focuses on instilling moral values, pride of accomplishment, acceptable social behavior, self-discipline, and self-confidence in students.

Responsibilities

  • Organization and Communication
    • Send information and correspondence to players and parents.
    • Conduct orientation programs for parents, athletes, and assistant coaches.
    • Work with the Principal or designee to develop non-league schedules and confirm league schedules.
    • Establish open communication with parents and athletes to address issues or concerns related to the team.
  • Administrative
    • Work with the Athletic Director to prepare a budget for the sport being coached.
    • Manage the ordering, inventory, repair, and cleaning of all sport-specific equipment.
    • Secure officials for non-league home games with the Principal or designee.
    • Make transportation arrangements for away games with the Principal or designee.
    • Ensure completion of yearly physical exams and insurance coverage for each athlete.
    • Confirm residential and academic eligibility of each athlete with the Athletic Director, Counselors, and Athletic Office.
    • Distribute team rosters, contest schedules, and contest locations to players and parents/guardians.
    • Monitor athlete class attendance, behavior, and academic progress.
    • Establish set practice times and locations with the Athletic Director.
    • Supervise and direct activities of any assistant coaches.
    • Ensure quality, effectiveness, and validity of any oral or written correspondence with the media.
    • Determine and procure team awards with the Athletic Director.
  • Training and Preparation of Athletes
    • Hold fair and equitable tryouts.
    • Provide all team rules and regulations to team members.
    • Train athletes on all rules and skills of the specific sport.
    • Provide training on physical conditioning and injury prevention.
    • Institute, teach, and monitor all drills.
    • Provide appropriate sport-specific tactical training.
    • Provide positive motivation.
    • Discipline players as necessary in accordance with team, SCIAA, TSSAA, or TMSSA guidelines.
    • Select, direct, and monitor activities of any team managers.
    • Confer with medical personnel for proper approval prior to allowing injured players to return to activity.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of and support for Aspire Public Schools' mission, vision, value statements (including antiracism), policies, and procedures.
  • Perform other related duties as required and assigned.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of the overall operation of an athletic program.
  • Minimum educational level: College-level Child Psychology course or previous work with youth.
  • Previous coaching experience or college-level (or higher) playing experience in the sport being coached.
  • Physical ability to:
    • Stand, walk, bend over, kneel, crouch, reach overhead, grasp, push, and pull.
    • Move, lift, and/or carry up to 30 pounds to shoulder height.
    • Use hands repetitively for fine manipulation, simple grasping, and power grasping.
    • Demonstrate normal depth perception.
    • Sit, walk, or stand for extended periods of time.
    • Dexterity to operate a computer keyboard, standard office equipment, and a telephone.
    • See and read a computer screen and printed matter with or without vision aids.
    • Hear and understand speech at normal levels and on the telephone with or without auditory aids.
  • Work authorization requirements:
    • Clear the Department of Justice background screening.
    • Authorized to work in the United States.
    • Provide health (TB) clearance (must update every four years).

Work Environment

  • Work indoors in a standard office, computer lab, and/or classroom environment.
  • Perform duties in both indoor and outdoor environments.
  • Exposure to dust, oils, and cleaning chemicals.
  • Some exposure to childhood and other diseases in a school environment.
  • May require working outside of typical workdays and office hours to meet operational deadlines.

Pay

Hourly rate for this position is $21.42.

Schedule

Part-time.
