Athletic Trainer - Sports Medicine

About the Role

Performs advanced evaluation and treatment skills and is involved in interdisciplinary collaboration, program development, staff education, and patient education.

Responsibilities

• Utilization of assessment skills for new patient appointments, assist with ROM measurements for final evaluations, perform focused orthopedic assessment of patients.
• Assist in education of MD plan of care and review of Home Exercise Program, pre-surgical exercises, or care.
• Utilize advanced clinical reasoning and skills in the selection of Durable Medical Equipment (DME) and brace application, fit, and patient education regarding diagnosis, expectations, treatment plan, surgery, and post-op care.
• Facilitate outside referral if DME is not appropriate.
• Evaluate the patient/family response to interventions as they relate to stated goals and expected outcomes and modify as needed.
• Document care provided and patient instructions given, meeting regulatory and compliance requirements for written documentation.
• Consistently participate in team meetings, rounds, and face-to-face discussions regarding patient care and/or customer service needs.
• Utilize appropriate tools to effectively relay patient status to other team members, leaders, appropriate medical personnel, and patient/family.
• Collaborate with the team to ensure the patient has necessary education for the plan of care, addressing age-specific, cultural, and/or socioeconomic factors.
• Assist with the fit and designation of DME, identifying and facilitating the acquisition of appropriate equipment, supplies, and services to meet patients’ needs in compliance with insurance requirements.
• Demonstrate advanced understanding of complex patient equipment needs and explore alternatives as needed.
• Ensure appropriate charging of DME and demonstrate knowledge of program-specific reimbursement information related to required authorizations and treatment plans for all payers.
• Consistently enter clinical charges into the EMR on the date treatment is provided.
• Assist the clinical team to room patients and assess status as per department procedures.
• Assist in injections and other procedures as needed with the care team.
• Perform clinical services under the direct supervision of the attending physician within the clinic setting, including medical history intake, measurements for final eval, gait training for crutches, DME fitting, ordering of diagnostic tests, patient education, and coordination with other healthcare providers.
• Demonstrate clinical expertise in a particular area of athletic training by providing education to department staff, obtaining advanced education or certification, or serving as a clinical resource to staff, including physicians and other hospital personnel.
• Lead the development of new or the revision of existing programs/services designed to enhance patient care or support program-specific goals and patient education.
• Assume project/committee leadership or other nonclinical duties as mutually agreed upon with the leader.
• Collaborate with the department leader to provide clinical and/or operational support, including coordinating work/projects, assisting with staff satisfaction initiatives, leading educational groups, serving as a resource for clinical issues, and assisting with patient or staff scheduling.

Skills & Qualifications

• Knowledge of biology, clinical judgment, medicine, cultural awareness, and consulting.
• Excellent communication skills, attention to detail, medical documentation, interpersonal skills, practice-based learning and improvement, empathy, and decision-making skills.
• Appropriate experience may be substituted for education on an equivalent basis.
• Minimum Required Education: Bachelor’s Degree.
• Minimum Required Experience: 2 years.
• Required Certification/Licensure: Certified athletic trainer, basic life support.

Physical Requirements

• Work requires occasionally lifting moderate weight materials, standing, or walking continuously.
• Occasional exposure to dust, noise, temperature changes, or contact with water or other liquids.
• Work is performed in an environmentally controlled environment.
• Ability to detect and translate speech or other communication required.
• May occasionally require the ability to distinguish colors and perceive relative distances between objects.
