About the Department
The Orthopedic, Neurosurgery & Physiatry service line delivers comprehensive musculoskeletal care to the Central Oregon community, including trauma, acute and inpatient/outpatient surgical care, preventative and chronic care in ambulatory settings, and athletic training services at contracted school and training locations. Led by a physician and administrative dyad, the service line ensures high standards of clinical quality and collaborates closely with Acute Care and Emergency General Surgery teams.
About the Role
The Certified Athletic Trainer coordinates sports medicine coverage at assigned high schools for athletic practices and events, as contracted by local school districts. Under the direction of team physicians or via written referrals, this role provides athletic training services to student athletes and may assist in the clinical setting as part of the Orthopedic Tech team. The position requires flexibility to accommodate school athletic schedules, including nights and weekends, and may involve daily travel to local high schools, sporting events, and off-site locations.
Responsibilities
- Provides evaluations, treatments, prevention, and rehabilitation of athletic injuries.
- Maintains general treatment orders reviewed annually and approved by the team physician and Athletic Training Supervisor.
- Delivers Athletic Trainer services for all home athletic contests and away varsity football games.
- Acts as a liaison between family physicians, specialists, the Athletic Director, athletes, and their parents.
- Maintains accurate records of injuries and treatments.
- Develops and manages a budget for the athletic training program at assigned high schools.
- Provides coaches and the Athletic Director with lists of medically eligible athletes.
- Maintains inventory of medical supplies and equipment.
- Provides concussion management services and assessments according to the latest protocols and tools.
- Assists with The Center Foundation events and programs, representing the organization in the community.
- Follows HIPAA and OSAA regulations and guidelines.
- May assist in the cast room with application/removal of casts/splints, fitting of Durable Medical Equipment (DME), and minor surgical procedures using aseptic technique (with prior approval from the Orthopedic Technician Supervisor).
- Directs patients in home rehabilitation exercise programs.
- Supports the organization’s vision, mission, and values, including Lean principles of continuous improvement.
- Ensures a safe environment for caregivers, patients, and guests while maintaining professionalism and confidentiality.
- Complies with all applicable laws, regulations, policies, and procedures, reporting violations as required.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in athletic training, health, physical education, or exercise science (Master’s degree preferred).
- Certification through the Board of Certification for the Athletic Trainer (BOC).
- State of Oregon Licensed Athletic Trainer registration.
- AHA Basic Life Support for Healthcare Provider certification.
- One (1) or more years of experience involving patient contact (preferred).
- Certified Strength Coach Specialist (preferred).
Pay
Pay range: $29.96 - $44.93 per hour, plus a 15% relief differential in lieu of benefits.
