About the Role

Supports the full range of athletic programs in Baltimore County Public Schools (BCPS) by providing comprehensive athletic healthcare including injury prevention, injury treatment, injury rehabilitation, and reconditioning to secondary school student athletes. Works in conjunction with the school nurse and school administrators to provide a safe athletic environment for student athletes.

Responsibilities

  • Oversees and supervises all aspects of the local school athletic training program.
  • Develops comprehensive preventative, rehabilitative, and emergency medical care programs and plans for student athletes.
  • Advises student athletes and coaching staff on techniques related to injury prevention, care, and conditioning.
  • Assists in monitoring the local school athletics program to ensure compliance with National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS), National Athletic Trainers' Association (NATA), Maryland Public Secondary Schools Athletic Association (MPSSAA), and BCPS policies and regulations regarding student-athlete health, safety, and well-being.
  • Promotes equity across the athletics program, ensuring practices and operations support BCPS values of equity and access for all students.
  • Coordinates and reviews student athlete pre-participation evaluations and medical history with the school nurse for indications of possible physical conditions that may preclude athletic participation.
  • In collaboration with the school nurse, evaluates injuries/illnesses and interprets clinical findings to determine appropriate participation status and rehabilitation plan of care.
  • Maintains accurate records of injuries and treatments using school system-approved software and processes.
  • Renders first aid and emergency medical care during practices and games.
  • Performs preventative taping, bracing, wrapping, and padding of injured areas.
  • Collaborates with the Athletic Director and Office of Health Services to ensure compliance with CPR/AED training for coaches and athletic staff.
  • Oversees and manages athletic training facilities and equipment in safe and sanitary conditions, complying with state and local guidelines.
  • Assists Administration and Risk Management with site and venue-specific Emergency Action Plans (EAPs) development and review, including Sudden Cardiac Arrest, Exertional Heat Illness, Sickle Cell Emergency, Concussion, and Lightning.
  • Coordinates EAP training and compliance for coaches.
  • Supervises safety factors of athletic competition by ensuring the elimination of undue risk.
  • Acts as a liaison between coaches, school staff, student athletes, parents/guardians, physicians, and other community stakeholders, establishing effective communication and working relationships.
  • Consults with teachers, counselors, and other school-based staff regarding academic support for student athletes recovering from injury.
  • Assists the school nurse and administration in health-related issues of student athletes per Local and State Health Department guidelines.
  • Utilizes an approved recordkeeping system and collaborates with school nurses regarding recordkeeping for athletic injuries, illnesses, treatments, and evaluations.
  • Serves as a liaison for the building emergency healthcare provider for ALICE, the BCPS Active Assault Protocol.
  • Participates in BCPS professional development and faculty meetings.
  • Attends and assists with the administration of identified county, regional, and state athletic contests.
  • Provides oversight of summer athletic activities.
  • Provides drop-in coverage with an assigned middle school athletic program.
  • Conducts training for coaches in the Care and Prevention of Athletic Injuries course throughout the year.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Education, Training, and Experience: Graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelor’s degree in athletic training. One year’s experience in a secondary school setting preferred. Master’s degree in athletic training may be substituted for required experience.
  • Licenses and Certificates:
    • Possession of Athletic Trainer Certification issued by the National Athletic Trainers Association (NATA) Board of Certification.
    • Possession of, or eligibility for, State of Maryland Board of Physicians Athletic Training License and Evaluation and Treatment Protocols with Supervising Physician. Must obtain this license within 60 days of hire.
    • Current CPR and First Aid Certification Required.
  • Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
    • Demonstrate technical skills enabling the appropriate use of electronic health records.
    • Significant skill in oral and written communication.
    • Demonstration of strong leadership, communication, and human relations skills.
  • Physical and Environmental Conditions: The work requires performing duties in various outside environments and weather. It may include physical activities such as walking, standing, lifting, operating medical equipment, and traveling throughout the County.

Conditions of Employment

  • Employees are expected to work flexible hours and schedules, including evenings and weekends, to meet students’ needs during athletic events.
  • FLSA: Exempt
  • RETIREMENT: Eligible for the Maryland State Retirement System.

Salary: $74,080 - $145,090

Other Compensation: Position may be eligible for relocation bonus, extra duty activities pay, or other student activities pay as defined in the applicable Bargaining Unit Agreement.
