Athletic Field Supervisor

About the Role
Reporting to the Manager, Landscaping and Grounds, this position is responsible for maintenance and supervision of all grounds-related duties, including fertilizations, chemical applications, staff, and scheduling tasks for athletic facilities and structures on the university-funded Forest Hills campus. Responsibilities include grounds maintenance for the Golf Practice Range, Baseball Fields, Softball Field, Soccer Field, and areas around the Christenberry Fieldhouse, Golf House, and Literacy Center. The role also involves supervising landscape maintenance, irrigation, pressure washing, lawn care, chemical applications, trimming shrubs and trees, and overseeing irrigation repair and diagnosis. Additional duties include pressure washing hardscaped areas, planning and coordinating landscape renovation projects, and managing pesticide and fertilizer applications. This position provides leadership to Christenberry Grounds staff, oversees daily work assignments, training, safety, and quality-control programs, and conducts annual performance evaluations.
Responsibilities
- Leadership:
- Provides leadership alongside the Manager of Grounds to Christenberry Field House grounds maintenance staff on daily tasks, responsibilities, and scheduling.
- Ensures work is completed safely with clear, professional communication.
- Schedules and participates in routine landscape maintenance, including mowing, weeding, trimming, planting, pruning, irrigation repair, chemical applications, and pressure washing.
- Oversees grounds staff performance and completes annual performance evaluations.
- Fills in for management during leave of absence and participates in staff recruitment.
- Communications:
- Communicates equipment needs to management and mechanics to maintain optimal operations for athletic fields.
- Regularly meets with athletic staff to ensure field quality meets expectations.
- Confers with university faculty, staff, and students regarding facility concerns.
- Serves as a liaison between athletic staff and landscaping/grounds staff.
- Work Management:
- Assists with daily responsibilities at athletic fields, Christenberry Fieldhouse, Golf Facility, Literacy Center, and other campuses as needed.
- Trains employees on proper techniques, safety guidelines, and chemical applications.
- Inputs data and records into tracking software.
- Assists in setting up for events, including tents and trash cans.
- Chemical Application and Scheduling:
- Develops, coordinates, and implements a campus pesticide program, including fertilization, herbicide, and pre-emergent applications.
- Creates a program for early ordering of materials to reduce chemical costs.
- Assists with ordering chemicals and supplies and training employees in chemical safety and application techniques.
- Maintains chemical inventory and ensures equipment is cleaned after use.
- Serves as the primary point of contact for all chemical applications at Christenberry Field House and athletic fields.
Requirements
- Associate degree from an accredited college or university in a related field.
- Five years of experience in grounds maintenance work, including two years in a supervisory capacity, or any combination of experience and training.
- Valid driver’s license.
- Georgia Commercial Pesticide Applicator Certification, Category 24, or the ability to pass the test within 90 days of hire.
Preferred Qualifications
- Associate degree in Turfgrass Management, Horticulture, Agronomy, or a related field.
- Ten years of directly applicable experience.
Skills
- Strong attention to detail, judgment, and discretion with confidential information.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office and other computer software/databases.
- Excellent verbal/written communication and interpersonal skills.
Pay
Pay Band: 7
Salary: $20.29/hourly - $25.34/hourly, commensurate with qualifications.
Schedule
Days: Monday-Friday
