About the Role
The Assistant Coach supports the head coach in organizing and supervising the sports program. They serve as a role model for student athletes, assisting in their development of character, self-discipline, and self-confidence. The Assistant Coach works closely with the head coach, athletic director, and principals to achieve the objectives of the sports program.
Responsibilities
- Assist the head coach in implementing athletic policies and ensure compliance with system, state, and league regulations.
- Follow the proper administrative line of command and attend required meetings.
- Collaborate with the head coach to establish the fundamental philosophy, skills, and techniques taught by the coaching staff.
- Design and conduct conferences, clinics, and staff meetings to ensure staff awareness of the overall program.
- Train and inform staff, encouraging professional growth through attendance at coaching clinics.
- Delegate duties, supervise implementation, and evaluate assistant coaches at the end of the season.
- Maintain discipline, address grievances, and foster morale among the coaching staff.
- Assist the athletic director in scheduling, transportation, and requirements for tournaments and special events.
- Prepare for scheduled sport events or practices, coordinating facility usage with maintenance and school employees.
- Provide documentation for state and system requirements, including physical examinations, parental consent, and athlete eligibility.
- Safeguard and maintain assigned equipment and facilities, ensuring proper care and protection.
- Provide recommendations to the athletic director regarding policy, procedural, or method changes.
- Mentor student athletes to develop character traits such as trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring, and citizenship.
- Monitor student athletes' grades and conduct, offering guidance and support as needed.
- Provide assistance, guidance, and safeguards to student athletes during practices, games, and travel.
- Communicate training rules and sport-specific regulations to participants.
- Develop and implement programs for injuries, medical attention, and emergencies.
- Complete and submit required paperwork for disabling athletic injuries within 24 hours.
- Direct student managers, assistants, and statisticians as needed.
- Assist in determining discipline measures and procedures, including due process when necessary.
- Communicate with parents regarding student athletes who are dropped or become ineligible.
- Support student athletes in their college or advanced educational selection process.
- Participate in the budgeting process by establishing requirements for the upcoming season and providing equipment recommendations.
- Account for all equipment, including issuance, storage, reconditioning, and inventory records.
- Ensure proper marking and identification of all equipment.
- Monitor equipment rooms and coaches' offices, authorizing access and equipment requisition.
- Enforce restrictions on student athletes' access to authorized areas of the building.
- Inspect locker rooms before and after practices and games to ensure cleanliness and maintain sport-specific equipment.
- Secure all doors, lights, windows, and locks before leaving the building if custodians are not on duty.
- Instill respect for equipment and school property in each player, emphasizing care and proper use.
- Organize preseason meetings for parents, coaches, players, and guests.
- Promote the sports program within the school and community.
Requirements
- Previous successful coaching experience in the assigned sport.
- Deep understanding of the technical aspects of the sport.
