Qualifications

  • Ability to assist with organizing and supervising a basketball program
  • Previous successful coaching experience in basketball
  • Substantial knowledge of the technical aspects of basketball and commitment to examining new theories and procedures pertinent to the field
  • Serves as an appropriate role model for student athletes through instructions and actions

Reports To

The head coach, who provides overall objectives and final evaluation in conjunction with the high school athletic director.

Supervises

Advises, coordinates, and supports a staff of high school volunteer coaches and middle school coaches in conjunction with the athletic director and respective principal.

Job Goal

To instruct athletes in the fundamental skills, strategy, and physical training necessary for individual and team success. The coach must also demonstrate behaviors that foster socially acceptable character development, self-discipline, self-confidence, and pride of accomplishment in student athletes. The coach is expected to upgrade their knowledge and skills through coaching clinics, observations, and consultation.

General Responsibilities

The success of athletic programs significantly influences the community's image of the school system. While public and parental pressure for winning performance exists, it must not override the objectives of good sportsmanship and mental health. The role involves extended hours, risk of injury, and due process challenges. This job description provides guidance, but coaches are expected to exercise common sense and good judgment in situations not explicitly covered.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Thorough knowledge of all athletic policies approved by the Derby Board of Education
  • Knowledge of existing system, state, and league regulations; implements them consistently
  • Understands the proper administrative line of command and refers all requests or grievances through proper channels

Staff Responsibilities

  • Maintains discipline, adjusts grievances, and works to increase morale and cooperation
  • Performs other duties assigned by the head coach, athletic director, or principal

Administrative Duties

  • Assists the head coach and athletic director in scheduling, providing transportation, and requirements for tournaments and special sport events
  • Assists in preparing for scheduled sport events or practices and adheres to scheduled facility times
  • Coordinates the program with maintenance and school employees
  • Assists with documentation to fulfill state and system requirements concerning physical examinations, parental consent, and eligibility
  • Provides proper safeguards for maintenance and protection of assigned equipment
  • Advises the head coach and recommends policy, method, or procedural changes
