Essential Functions, Primary Responsibilities and Objectives

  • Provide comprehensive academic advising to new and continuing student athletes by exercising professional judgment to clarify educational goals, recommend programs of coursework, and guide students toward timely degree completion.
  • Develop, implement, and monitor individual academic plans for assigned and at-risk student athletes, utilizing data, early alert systems, and proactive intervention strategies to support persistence and retention.
  • Analyze performance, engagement, and progression data of student-athletes at the student and team level each semester to support persistence and retention.
  • Communicate effectively and independently with new and returning student-athletes regarding advising expectations, academic and athletic policies, registration timelines, and required academic actions through multiple communication modalities.
  • Contribute to the design, coordination, and implementation of advising and retention initiatives for student athletes by collaborating with athletics, faculty, and staff to identify academic risk factors, coordinate interventions, and contribute to a holistic, institution-wide approach to student success.
  • Maintain availability to meet institutional advising demands during peak academic cycle milestones, including (but not limited to) annual forum, graduation, orientations, the week prior to the start of the semester, the first two weeks of the semester, the last two weeks of the semester prior to finals, and advising periods.

  • Understanding of student development and strategies to motivate students to achieve their academic goals and ability to support students in managing emotions constructively in academic environments.
  • Good organizational skills with the ability to prioritize and multitask responsibilities.
  • Proficient computer skills and ability to learn database programs.
  • Demonstrated effective oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to collaborate with coaches and instructors to support student-athlete academic success to promote healthy, productive relationships along faculty and student athletes.
  • Prioritization of initiative and problem-solving skills.
  • Commitment to fulfillment of the College mission.

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree required in education, student development, or related field preferred.

Experience

  • Advising experience in higher education or experience working with at-risk student populations.
  • Prior experience working with student athletes preferred.
  • Documented experience with database and LMS programs, and ability to work collaboratively with others to achieve a common goal.
