AT - CDL Driver Trainer (Temporary)

About the role

This temporary position will be responsible for supporting and performing all driver training functions for the CDL training program at the assigned location, supporting Amazon Career Choice associates in dedicated markets. The role fulfills end‑of‑season training for Amazon Career Choice in a select market or markets nationwide, with an anticipated need of no more than 90 days. The AT‑CDL Driver Trainer must have proven longevity in the field, excellent communication skills, and demonstrated physical, intellectual, and leadership ability to perform duties over the road, on the maneuvering range, and in classroom instruction. The trainer works under the guidance and supervision of the Program Director, Lead Driver Trainer, or their designee.

• Delivers instructional material: trains students in all areas of trucking/driving.
• Administers written tests on classroom material and evaluates grades.
• Conducts pre‑trip inspections of commercial motor vehicles.
• Instructs air‑brake tests.
• Instructs straight‑line backing.
• Instructs offset backing, right and left.
• Instructs 45‑degree alley‑docking.
• Instructs parallel parking, conventional side, and driver side.
• Utilizes effective delivery skills (e.g., eye contact, voice intonation, and various questioning techniques).
• Draws on personal experiences to relate the material presented.
• Utilizes required skills assessments to evaluate student progress in the skills required to successfully pass and obtain their Commercial Driver’s License.
• Ability to stand and walk for 8‑10 hours outside, in all elements, climb in and out of trucks several times a day, and lift and move up to 50 lbs.

Requirements

• Valid Commercial Driver’s License (CDL), the Class level must meet the required level of the position.
• High School Diploma or GED.
• 3 years of verifiable on‑the‑road experience within the last 5 years.
• MVR and background check, which includes a drug screening.
• Ability to pass our road test, as applicable.
• Required to pass a DOT physical and DOT drug screen.
• Ability to maintain a valid Medical Examiner Certificate and pass DOT drug tests upon hire and on an ongoing basis, when applicable.
• Knowledge of procedures for and ability to execute a pre‑trip inspection, air‑brake tests, and CDL driving essentials (i.e., straight‑line backing, offset backing, 45‑degree alley‑docking, parallel parking).
• Ability to instruct shifting patterns (i.e., driving highway, city, night vs day, in different weather conditions).
• Knowledge of and demonstrated ability to maintain vehicle equipment.
• Motivation, dedication, professionalism, integrity, and enthusiasm for teaching.
• Commitment to stay current with industry standards and requirements within the field of instruction.
• Ability to facilitate learning on‑course content in the field of instruction.
• Interpersonal relationship skills are necessary for positive interactions with students, alumni, faculty, and employers.
• Proficiency in technology to include but not limited to Microsoft Office suite, Google suite, and cloud‑based applications.
• Physical Demands:
• Mobility & Balance: Ability to frequently climb in/out of the cab, bend, squat, kneel, twist and reach to perform pre/post‑trip inspections and navigate tight spaces.
• Strength: Ability to crank trailer landing gear (often 100+ lbs), handle training and safety equipment, and potentially assist with loading/unloading (if applicable).
• Endurance: Ability to sustain physical activity and be alert during extending driving and instructional periods, including exposure to varying weather conditions such as heat, cold, wind, rain, ice or snow.
• Sensory Acuity and Overall Health: Must possess and maintain a valid DOT Medical Examiner’s Certificate and meet DOT physical qualifications required to hold a CDL, with or without reasonable accommodations, as required by Federal regulations.
• Specific Tasks & Considerations:
• Demonstrating Skills: Physically showing students how to couple/uncouple trailers, perform inspections, and maneuver the large vehicle.
• Environmental Exposure: Working outdoors in various conditions including extreme heat, cold, rain, or snow while training.
