About the Role

This position is responsible for all driver training functions for the CDL training program at an assigned location. The CDL Driver Trainer will work under the guidance of the Program Director, Lead Driver Trainer, or their designee, providing training with an Ancora Training contracted company and their employees in six consecutive 9-week cohorts. Due to the nature of the role, occasional travel to another location may be required.

Responsibilities

• Promote and maintain a positive learning environment for students and staff.
• Adhere to and enforce all policies, procedures, and compliance rules and regulations.
• Convene assigned classes on time and maintain a safe training environment.
• Serve as a professional role model, inspiring student confidence in the program and faculty.
• Maintain professional dress, demeanor, and communication, including confidentiality with students and records.
• Interact courteously and positively with students and colleagues, treating all with fairness and objectivity.
• Provide advance notification regarding lateness, absence, or vacation schedules during substitute assignments.
• Fulfill administrative responsibilities, including maintaining accurate records of student progress, performance, and attendance.
• Maintain flexibility to meet the instructional needs of the division or client.
• Deliver instructional material, including:
  • Training students in all areas of trucking and driving.
  • Administering written tests and evaluating grades.
  • Conducting pre-trip inspections of commercial motor vehicles.
  • Instructing air-brake tests, straight-line backing, offset backing, 45-degree alley-docking, and parallel parking.
  • Utilizing effective delivery skills and personal experiences to relate material.
  • Using required skills assessments to evaluate student progress for CDL licensure.

Requirements

• Valid Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with the required class level for the position.
• High School Diploma or GED.
• 3 years of verifiable on-the-road experience within the last 5 years.
• Ability to pass a Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) check, background check, and drug screening.
• Ability to pass a road test, DOT physical, and DOT drug screen.
• Ability to maintain a valid Medical Examiner Certificate and pass ongoing DOT drug tests.
• Knowledge of pre-trip inspections, air-brake tests, and CDL driving essentials (e.g., straight-line backing, offset backing, alley-docking, parallel parking).
• Ability to instruct shifting patterns for various driving conditions (highway, city, night, day, and weather).
• Knowledge of vehicle equipment maintenance.
• Motivation, dedication, professionalism, integrity, and enthusiasm for teaching.
• Sensitivity to the needs of adult learners.
• Ability to attend new faculty orientation before the first term of employment.
• Commitment to the school’s mission and staying current with industry standards.
• Excellent presentation, verbal, and written communication skills.

• Proficiency in technology, including Microsoft Office Suite, Google Suite, and cloud-based applications.

Physical Demands

• Mobility & Balance: Ability to frequently climb in/out of the cab, bend, squat, kneel, twist, and reach for pre/post-trip inspections and navigating tight spaces.
• Strength: Ability to crank trailer landing gear (often 100+ lbs), handle training and safety equipment, and potentially assist with loading/unloading.
• Endurance: Ability to sustain physical activity and alertness during extended driving and instructional periods, including exposure to varying weather conditions (heat, cold, wind, rain, ice, or snow).
• Sensory Acuity and Overall Health: Must possess and maintain a valid DOT Medical Examiner’s Certificate and meet DOT physical qualifications required to hold a CDL.
• Specific Tasks: Physically demonstrate skills such as coupling/uncoupling trailers, inspections, and maneuvering large vehicles.
• Environmental Exposure: Working outdoors in various conditions, including extreme heat, cold, rain, or snow while training.

Work Environment
