Astrophysics: Field Galaxy Surveys
About the role
The NASA Postdoctoral Program (NPP) offers unique research opportunities to highly-talented scientists to engage in ongoing NASA research projects at a NASA Center, NASA Headquarters, or at a NASA-affiliated research institute. These one- to three-year fellowships are competitive and are designed to advance NASA’s missions in space science, Earth science, aeronautics, space operations, exploration systems, and astrobiology.
Description
Field galaxy surveys have taught us much of what we know about galaxy evolution. Conducted with a wide variety of telescopes and techniques, and using both imaging and spectroscopy, galaxy surveys have introduced and addressed such divergent topics as the faint blue galaxy problem, ultra-luminous infrared galaxies (ULIRGs), the starburst-AGN connection, and the star formation history of the Universe. Our research currently uses data from the Webb, Hubble, Spitzer, and Chandra Deep Fields, JWST and HST legacy and treasury surveys, ground-based follow-up, and theoretical modeling to study galaxy evolution. We study galaxy morphology, gravitational lensed galaxies and a variety of techniques to search for emission-line galaxies. These results should help us plan future surveys to be conducted with the Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope.
