About the role

The NASA Postdoctoral Program (NPP) offers unique research opportunities in extragalactic astronomy, focusing on observational studies of galaxy clusters and active galactic nuclei (AGN).

Responsibilities

  • Engage in ongoing NASA research projects at Goddard Space Flight Center, Greenbelt, Maryland.
  • Use NASA observatories such as the Hubble Space Telescope (HST), Chandra, XMM, Spitzer, GALEX, and NASA ground-based telescopes like Keck or IRTF.
  • Conduct spectroscopic and imaging studies of galaxy clusters and AGN.
  • Participate in absorption line studies of cosmic web material using ground-based optical/infrared observatories and radio observatories.
  • Collaborate with advisors including Jane Rigby, Susan G Neff, Sangeeta Malhotra, James E Rhoads, and Francesca Civano.

Requirements

  • Doctoral degree completed within the last five years.
  • Strong background in astrophysics, extragalactic astronomy, or related fields.
  • Experience with observational astronomy techniques and data analysis.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Interest in active galactic nuclei and galaxy cluster research.

Qualifications

  • U.S. Citizenship, U.S. Lawful Permanent Resident (LPR), or eligibility for an Exchange Visitor J-1 visa status.
  • Applicants must be Legal Permanent Residents of the United States if from Designated Countries.
  • Valid EAD card and I-485 or I-589 forms in pending status for applicants seeking LPR status.

Skills

  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Proficiency in programming languages such as Python, Perl, or R.
  • Knowledge of statistical analysis software.
  • Ability to work effectively in a collaborative environment.

Pay
