About the role

The Assurance Manager supervises, directs, and reviews audit results through delegation across planning, field work, and wrap-up stages. This role involves marketing, networking, and business development, as well as ensuring engagement profitability through billings and collections. Responsibilities include advising clients on economic and regulatory risks, resolving complex accounting issues, applying GAAP and GAAS, writing technical consultation memos, and assessing financial reporting control systems.

Responsibilities

  • Apply knowledge of the control environment to enhance effectiveness or mitigate risks of policies and procedures.
  • Validate and assess the effectiveness of internal control over financial reporting.
  • Identify and communicate suggestions to improve client internal controls and accounting procedures.
  • Delegate audit functions and supervise audit team members, reviewing workpapers and conclusions preferably onsite during field work.
  • Provide on-the-job training to engagement staff.
  • Apply GAAP principles to client transactions, documenting and communicating their application.
  • Consult with clients on the impact of new accounting pronouncements.
  • Monitor and communicate important professional and industry pronouncements.
  • Present and discuss alternative accounting principles and draft complex financial statements and footnote disclosures.
  • Identify complex accounting issues and resolve them, consulting BDO technical experts as needed.
  • Apply SEC regulations and PCAOB guidelines, reviewing SEC filings for accuracy and completeness.
  • Review required communications to clients and audit committees for compliance with firm and professional guidelines.
  • Ensure compliance with engagement independence requirements.
  • Apply GAAS and PCAOB standards in performing and supervising work, guiding and affirming conclusions made by others.
  • Communicate matters required to be reported to the Audit Committee/Board.
  • Use efficiency tools such as statistical sampling and CAATS.
  • Apply BDO standards to ensure quality service delivery, conducting detailed reviews to assure audit completion per assurance manual standards.
  • Prepare or review required communications to management and audit committees.
  • Recommend appropriate outcomes to critical issues and prepare client acceptance/retention procedures.
  • Plan and oversee audit execution with quality, efficiency, and completeness despite deadline pressures.
  • Execute proper BDO methodology, including archiving procedures and Sarbanes-Oxley compliance for public clients.
  • Define and conduct research projects, using appropriate tools and drawing conclusions based on research.
  • Prepare memos supporting research and conclusions, consulting with others as needed.
  • Present issues to RTD or concurring reviewer effectively and accurately.

Supervisory Responsibilities

  • Supervise Associates and Senior Associates on all projects.
  • Review work prepared by Associates and Senior Associates and provide feedback.
  • Act as a Career Advisor to Associates and Senior Associates.
  • Schedule and manage workloads for Associates and Senior Associates.
  • Provide verbal and written performance feedback.
  • Teach and coach Seniors and Associates through on-the-job learning.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Economics, or Statistics (required); Master’s degree in Accountancy (preferred).
  • Five or more years of relevant audit experience and/or public accounting, private industry accounting, or consulting/professional services experience.
  • Prior significant supervisory experience.
  • Industry expertise in one or more assurance specialties (preferred).
  • Active licensed U.S. CPA, recognized active International Equivalent, or unique qualification as defined by BDO’s Assurance Licensing Policy (required).
  • If holding an active international equivalent or unique qualification, must obtain an active U.S. CPA license within the approved timeframe.
  • Proficient with the Microsoft Office Suite (preferred).
  • Experience with assurance applications and research tools (preferred).

  • Excellent people development and delegation skills, including training, instruction, and engagement scheduling.

  • Ability to ensure engagement profitability, including billings and collections.

Pay

  • California: $120,000 - $140,000
  • Colorado: $95,000 - $130,000
  • Illinois: $100,000 - $125,000
  • Maryland: $105,000 - $125,000
  • Massachusetts: $105,000 - $115,000
  • Minnesota: $95,000 - $110,000
  • New Jersey: $104,000 - $112,000
  • NYC/Long Island/Westchester: $110,000 - $150,000
  • Ohio: $95,000 - $125,000
  • Washington: $95,000 - $115,000
  • Washington DC: $105,000 - $128,000
