Hill Crest Behavioral Health is an acute care, 194-bed inpatient psychiatric facility located in Birmingham, AL, providing mental health services for adolescents and adults. We do not treat medically compromised individuals beyond our scope of care. Current treatment programs include:

About the role
The Assistant Director collaborates with the Director of Clinical Services in all aspects of guiding and administering the Therapy Services of the Residential and Group Home units. This role also serves as a therapist on assigned cases and Program Coordinator on assigned units. A special focus includes gathering and submitting required data to DHR, DMH, and UHS, as well as supervising Residential and Group Home Therapy Staff in the absence of the Director of Clinical Services.
MUST HAVE availability to attend an 8-business day Orientation from 8a-4p without interruptions.
Responsibilities
- Assist Director of Clinical Services in developing, interpreting, and implementing hospital and departmental philosophy, objective standards, policies, and procedures.
- Recommend a balanced staffing pattern with qualified and competent persons that address continuity of care, acuity needs, and census.
- Work in close collaboration with referral sources to ensure awareness of bed availability and have direct input into admission screening. Oversee discharge and aftercare planning and maintain census at specified levels for all levels of care.
- Develop and implement cost-containment efforts for clinical services; responsible for recommendations for space and other resources needed by the department in conjunction with Hospital Administration.
- Ensure Performance Improvement Program for all clinical areas.
- In collaboration with the Risk Manager and Unit Managers, investigate critical incidents and complaints from patients, personnel, and other departments, keeping Hospital Administration informed.
- Conduct investigations as appropriate and in a timely fashion.
- Serve on hospital committees as requested by administration or required by regulatory standards to improve communication, coordination, and quality patient care.
- Participate in inter-departmental and intra-departmental activities aimed at improving communication, coordination, and quality patient care.
- Make rounds on the units daily or as needed to assure a therapeutic and safe environment, patient’s rights, safety, and patient participation in their care.
- Under the direction of the Director of Clinical Services, plan, develop, and coordinate the needs of the program with other disciplines, activities, and programs. Provide for staff support and assess integration of efforts in conjunction with Administration. Evaluate the effectiveness of all programs and make recommendations and changes as indicated.
- Meet regularly with managers to review staff supervision issues and conduct supervision together. Ensure documentation is completed thoroughly.
- Meet with Program Coordinators at least every two weeks to assess program needs and allow feedback.
- Review problem-solving forms with Coordinators and Patient Advocate regularly and in a timely fashion.
- Handle any performance issues with Program Managers and address necessary issues as appropriate.
- Conduct regularly scheduled staff meetings to keep staff informed, identify employee concerns, resolve conflicts, and provide the opportunity for input from staff in conjunction with Manager. Thorough minutes are written.
- Assist in the determination of the qualifications and competence of therapy and social science personnel in conjunction with the Managers/Coordinators and assist in interviewing prospective staff.
- Consistently demonstrate competence in day-to-day scheduling of duties by completing tasks on time with little assistance from others as required.
- Delegate duties as appropriate; attend all mandatory employee in-services as scheduled.
- Provide in-service and staff development for staff. Supervise social work and therapy staff consistent with department and hospital standards to achieve department objectives.
- Contribute to the overall treatment team by assisting in developing plans of care, formulating and reviewing plans, and attending treatment team meetings as appropriate. Involve referral sources in the treatment process and follow-up care.
- Maintain accurate and precise documentation: progress notes, MTP’s, psychosocial history, discharge assessments and plans, charge sheets, and statistics. Complete documentation per policy and procedure and in a timely manner.
- Provide direct care; utilize appropriate social work knowledge and skills in providing treatment to patients and their families.
- Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of National Patient Safety Goals, and the policies and standards of accreditation entities including but not limited to Joint Commission, DMH, DHR, and CMS.
- Perform other duties as assigned/required by this position.
Requirements
- Graduate from an approved college or university with a Master’s degree in Social Work, Counseling, Psychiatric Nursing, or a closely related field.
- Current license as a LICSW-S, LICSW, LMSW, LPC-S, LPC, or MSN in the State of Alabama required. Supervisory/Trainer credential most preferred.
- Minimum 2 years of demonstrated excellence in counseling and social work.
- Experience on an inpatient psychiatric unit and/or a residential treatment center most preferred.
- Handle With Care, First Aid, CPR training and certification (company training provided).
- Ability to manage clinical therapy programs and milieu.
