Associate Vice Chancellor for External Affairs

About the Organization
The Office of External Affairs and Military Relations serves as an advocate and the primary liaison between Fayetteville State University and the communities it serves on local, regional, state, and federal issues. The office is the principal point of contact between the university and all levels of community agencies, organizations, and government. It also acts as a liaison to the University of North Carolina System’s State and Federal Relations Offices, monitoring legislation related to higher education, working with legislators to influence public policy, and increasing awareness of the university’s educational outreach and research programs.
About the Role
The Associate Vice Chancellor for External Affairs plays a crucial role in facilitating and providing guidance to various organizational initiatives related to communications, public involvement, education, and community relations projects. This position is responsible for building community awareness and support for Fayetteville State University (FSU) and its programs throughout the region. Reporting to the Vice Chancellor for External Affairs & Military Relations, the Associate Vice Chancellor serves as a key advisor in interactions with the university’s public stakeholders to achieve the university’s objectives.
Responsibilities
- Develop and implement strategic initiatives that enhance the university’s reputation and foster community support.
- Engage with diverse stakeholders, including local, regional, state, and federal government entities, to build consensus and advocate for the university’s priorities.
- Represent the organization at public events and advocate for legislative priorities.
- Identify emerging issues, assess their impact, and develop appropriate strategies using strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Work collaboratively with a wide range of individuals and departments within the university’s complex organizational structure.
Requirements
- A master’s degree in political science, public relations, public administration, higher education administration, or a related field.
- 5–7 years of experience in external affairs, community relations, public advocacy, or a related field, preferably in a higher education setting.
- Familiarity with higher education policies, trends, and challenges, particularly related to external affairs and community engagement.
- Strong knowledge of local, regional, state, and federal government processes, policies, and legislative frameworks.
- Excellent interpersonal, communication, and negotiation skills.
- Demonstrated experience in public speaking and representing an organization at public events.
Preferred Qualifications
- Additional experience or specialized knowledge in higher education external affairs and community engagement.
