Associate Senior Counsel - Florida Hospital Counsel

About the Role

This position will work with both the Florida Enterprise (“FE”) Practice Group and the Clinical Affairs Practice Group.

• The Florida Enterprise Practice Group provides strategic advice and counsel to senior and operations leaders on business issues related to Johns Hopkins Health System’s healthcare facilities and activities in Florida, including:
  • A specialty-licensed free-standing children’s hospital (Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital)
  • An employed pediatric physician group with subspecialists
  • A children’s medical research institute
  • A clinically integrated pediatric network
• The Clinical Affairs Practice Group provides legal advice on clinical risk, adverse events, patient care issues, regulatory complaints, bioethical issues, guardianships, and medical staff matters. It also delivers legal and risk management education, policy review, medical staff bylaws revisions, and consultation on clinical and medical staff risk issues.

Responsibilities

• Review, analyze, draft, and negotiate complex and routine agreements related to clinical and business affairs, including physician employment agreements and agreements with affiliated hospitals and health systems.
• Advise clinical teams and risk management on patient care issues, including informed consent, surrogate decision-makers, and reproductive health services.
• Recognize and advise on regulatory, accreditation, and licensure requirements, as well as Anti-Kickback, Stark Law, tax exemption, nonprofit law, and other legal concerns.
• Provide legal support to the Florida risk-management team on patient consent, clinical care, ethics, and other healthcare-related matters.
• Offer legal counsel to the hospital medical staff and medical staff committees.
• Investigate adverse patient outcomes in anticipation of litigation and develop strategic responses.
• Participate in and advise on proactive risk assessments.

Requirements

• Juris Doctor degree from an accredited law school.
• Seven (7) years of relevant legal experience, including five (5) years as a licensed attorney.
• Of the total experience, three (3) years should include demonstrated leadership responsibilities (e.g., managing projects, assigning work, or leading teams).
• Florida Bar Membership or qualification for Florida Authorized House Counsel.
• Continuing legal education through seminars, legal periodicals, judicial decisions, and legislative updates.

Pay

$165,000 to $195,000 per year. Compensation will be commensurate with experience for roles of similar scope and responsibility.
