About the Role

An Associate Scientist independently works on tasks in work packages of R&D activities and can independently perform scientific literature research in fields related to the current work. They keep themselves up to date with the latest scientific methods and competencies and contribute under guidance to scientific publications, patents, and other forms of communication. They provide day-to-day laboratory leadership for lab technicians.

Responsibilities

  • With guidance mainly received from stakeholders and superiors, clearly define problems and routinely conduct literature reviews prior to tackling new projects or technologies.
  • Suggest new ideas to solve problems and make innovative contributions.
  • Effectively apply the scientific method or engineering design process and statistics in the solution to problems in technical development.
  • Build competency on incorporating information from outside the team, department, and company to develop relevant solutions.
  • Provide day-to-day laboratory leadership of technicians.
  • Lead a small technical sub-team of a larger well-defined project.
  • Proactively seek support and mentoring.
  • Communicate clearly and effectively in a timely manner, both verbally and in writing, to varied, mostly internal, technical audiences.
  • Understand the alignment of work package goals with the project and use it to define appropriate tasks.
  • Demonstrate technical competency by developing value-creating solutions when presented with problems of defined scope and impact.
  • Act as an information resource on team focus topics for stakeholders and other members of the technical community.
  • Use Omya IP processes for protecting value.
  • Produce internal reports and documents of quality to be used in IDFs and patents.
  • Conduct patent searches and understand trends and technical needs.
  • Consistently demonstrate the highest SHE (Safety, Health, Environment) standards and live by the Omya values.
  • Intervene when inappropriate behavior is exhibited.
  • Pursue Omya leadership attributes.
  • May coordinate ISO or safety activities for the team or R&D department.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in chemistry, material science, polymer science, or similar field.
  • Minimum of 1–8 years’ technical experience and demonstrated knowledge in the field, with a willingness to do practical laboratory work.
  • Effectively apply the scientific method or engineering design process and statistics in problem-solving and technical development.
  • Basic project management skills.
  • Good command of both oral and written English.
  • Occasional travel may be required.
  • Must possess current U.S. employment authorization; sponsorship is not available for this position.
