Associate or Senior Editor

About the role

We seek a talented editor to join our team as an Associate or Senior Editor at Science. The ideal candidate will have a strong research background in physics with a focus on photonics, a rigorous and critical approach to evaluating scientific work, a passion for science, and excellent networking skills.

Responsibilities

• Manage the evaluation, review, and editing of submitted manuscripts in physics.
• Judge the scientific value of research and select reviewers for submitted manuscripts.
• Discuss and make recommendations regarding manuscripts and reviews with staff, advisors, and authors.
• Write summaries of research results for publication.
• Guide authors on manuscript revisions and edit manuscripts for scientific content and style before and after revisions.
• Follow manuscripts through the production process to ensure timely publication.
• Commission and edit timely review articles on a broad range of topics.
• Foster relationships and communication with the scientific community through meetings and professional contacts.
• Represent Science at scientific meetings nationally and internationally.

Requirements

• PhD in physics.
• One to five years of post-PhD experience, including postdoctoral research and multiple publications.
• Comprehensive knowledge of scientific research methods to discuss technical issues with authors.
• Outreach skills to acquire excellent papers.
• Exceptional written, communication, and listening skills to evaluate, edit, and modify manuscripts in collaboration with authors and reviewers.
• Ability to work constructively as part of a tight-knit team.
• Editorial experience is preferred but not required.

Location

Pay

Anticipated initial rate: $84,000 – $95,000 per year (US hires). Final offer will reflect total compensation and benefits and is subject to AAAS discretion.
