About the role
Carnegie Museum of Natural History, one of the four Carnegie Museums of Pittsburgh, is seeking an experienced, full-time Associate Objects Conservator, Temporary to join our conservation department.
Responsibilities
- Assess water damage to the 40ft. ancient Egyptian wooden boat in our care.
- Work with museum staff to rehouse the boat in a stable environment.
- Treat, prepare, and plan for the boat's eventual exhibition in a new location.
- Undertake a range of treatments on the boat and other ancient Egyptian objects in our care to the highest level of quality, and to AIC ethical guidelines.
- Document and treat reports in accordance with CMNH standards.
- Review public facing content related to the museum’s conservation efforts on an as needed basis.
- Conduct research, write academic papers, or prepare for conference presentations.
- Engage with public, as much of the conservation work and treatment will be done in the public view.
- Supervise interns and volunteers.
Requirements
- Minimum of 3 years of post-graduate experience working with archaeological materials, ideally wood, and a degree in conservation, or equivalent experience required.
- Experience with archaeological wood preferred.
Qualifications
- Master’s degree in Conservation with a specialty in objects.
Skills
- Strong communication and organizational skills.
- Experience researching the preservation of archaeological materials preferred.
- Treatment practice and documentation must be of an exceptionally high standard.

The position is eligible for the Carnegie Museums of Pittsburgh’s many Benefits. Expected starting pay range, based on experience, is $45,000-52,000.
