About the Role

This position is a management vacancy within the P NC LEGAL Department of the P LEGAL Division at Hawaiian Electric Company. The role will be filled at either the Associate General Counsel or Senior Associate General Counsel level, depending on the selected candidate's qualifications. The position emphasizes expertise in one or more of the following areas: Human Resources, Construction, Federal Contracts, Cyber/Privacy, IT/OT, or Environmental.

Responsibilities

  • Provides in-house legal services for Hawaiian Electric and its subsidiaries, with emphasis in one or more of the following areas: Human Resources, Construction, Federal Contracts, Cyber/Privacy, IT/OT, Environmental.
  • Evaluates complex legal issues and assesses risk in areas including business and corporate law, federal contracts, public utility regulation, labor and employment law, environmental regulation, real property, construction law, securities, finance, compensation and benefits, legislation, litigation, intellectual property, information technology, telecommunications, and privacy/data protection law.
  • Develops preventative law programs, including training for operational managers and staff.
  • Advises officers, managers, and employees on new laws, legal trends, cases, and policies pertinent to the companies.
  • Monitors and directs work performed by outside attorneys to ensure efficiency and high value; assists in managing outside counsel costs, including invoice reviews.
  • Directs, guides, and monitors the work of Legal Department Legal Assistants.
  • Participates as a legal adviser on task forces, committees, and special projects.
  • Communicates effectively with senior management on legal issues and risks, including preparing and delivering presentations.
  • Advocates the companies’ positions externally.
  • Assists in developing and implementing the companies’ policies, procedures, and strategies.
  • Handles routine matters in court or before governmental administrative agencies.
  • Provides additional legal services as the attorney's abilities, education, and experience allow.
  • Participates in company emergency response activities as assigned.

Requirements

  • Law degree and membership in the Hawaii State Bar Association (or license to practice law in good standing in another state pending admission to the Hawaii bar).
  • Thorough knowledge of commercial and business law, particularly contract law, with an emphasis on managing risks and conflicting priorities.
  • General knowledge and familiarity with the legal areas listed in the job description, with specialized knowledge in one or more of these areas.

Qualifications

Associate General Counsel

  • Minimum of 4 years of legal experience.

  • Minimum of 7 years of legal experience, with at least 3 years of concentration in one or more specialized practice areas (Human Resources, Construction, Federal Contracts, Cyber/Privacy, IT/OT, Environmental).
  • Broad knowledge of energy law and/or law applicable to specialized practice areas.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal oversight, manage time effectively, and deliver high-quality work.
  • Strong interpersonal, relationship management, and conflict resolution skills.
  • Ability to prioritize work demands, oversee multiple projects, and remain flexible in a dynamic work environment.
  • Competency in leadership, including mentoring and training others.
  • Ability to maintain objectivity and a positive attitude under stressful conditions.
  • Demonstrated ability to provide creative problem-solving and strategic direction with minimal oversight.

Pay

The hiring range for the Associate General Counsel position is $119,500 - $156,250. The hiring range for the Senior Associate General Counsel position is $137,400 - $179,600. The selected candidate will be placed according to their skills and qualifications.
