Associate General Counsel

Position Summary

The Office of University General Counsel at Florida Atlantic University is seeking an Associate General Counsel in Boca Raton, FL. Reporting to the General Counsel, this position provides comprehensive legal counsel and strategic guidance on a wide range of university matters, including transactional agreements, litigation, and regulatory compliance. The role serves as a key advisor to university leadership on legal rights, obligations, and risk management, while supporting the development of institutional policies. The incumbent manages litigation and administrative matters, collaborates with internal and external partners, and ensures compliance with state and federal laws, contributing to the effective governance and operations of the University and its Board of Trustees.

Summary of Responsibilities

• Manages university litigation and administrative law matters, including coordinating with the State’s Division of Risk Management on the selection and assignment of outside counsel, overseeing discovery, trial preparation, mediation, and settlement negotiations.
• Provides legal advice to the Division of Student Affairs on a variety of issues related to student discipline, crisis response, academics, financial matters, residency, contracts, international programs, Title IX, the Americans with Disabilities Act, free speech, and religious accommodations.
• Supervises the University’s processes for subpoena responses and document production and advises institutional clients on compliance with Florida’s public records laws and Federal privacy laws.
• Serves as a liaison to the University Police Department, the Office of Civil Rights and Title IX, Public Affairs, and the University’s Risk Manager.
• Appears and attends at court and mediation as necessary.

Minimum Qualifications

• Juris doctor degree from an accredited institution and two years of appropriate experience required.
• At least two years of professional experience and Litigation Management skills preferred.

Salary

$145,000 - $185,000 annually.
