About the role
The Associate Environmental Scientist supports the Company’s waste-approval and facility-compliance activities by reviewing waste streams, interpreting regulatory requirements, maintaining approval data and procedures, and providing guidance on hazardous waste, used oil, and applicable state regulations.
Responsibilities
- Review and approve waste streams and perform related data entry for a Company treatment, storage, and disposal facility.
- Develop and maintain Waste Approvals policies and procedures consistent with the facility Waste Analysis Plan and treatment, storage, and disposal facility permit.
- Research and interpret RCRA, DOT, hazardous-waste, used-oil, and applicable state regulatory requirements.
- Explain regulatory requirements to generators, sales representatives, and Waste Approvals staff regarding waste characterization and applicable RCRA and DOT requirements.
- Review and interpret treatment, storage, and disposal facility permit conditions and apply the conditions to waste-approval procedures.
- Identify and address potential compliance issues associated with waste streams and the facility permit.
- Provide Waste Approvals input to EHS managers developing Company policies, procedures, and programs.
- Communicate with internal and external customers regarding Company operations and regulatory issues related to facility compliance.
- Identify, track, and report waste-approval metrics and establish short- and long-term goals and targets to improve performance.
- Coordinate with treatment, storage, and disposal facilities to streamline outbound approvals and shipments.
- Perform administrative duties related to Waste Approvals activities.
- Represent the Company professionally to employees, external contacts, and the public.
- Travel is required by car or air to other Company locations or vendors.
- Perform other duties as assigned by management.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry or a related field.
- Experience with waste-stream approvals, particularly for treatment, storage, and disposal facilities.
- Knowledge of DOT and RCRA regulations related to solid waste, hazardous waste, and used oil, including federal regulations and state counterparts.
- Experience reviewing and interpreting treatment, storage, and disposal facility permit conditions and applying the conditions to waste-approval procedures.
- Experience creating Waste Approvals procedures and policies.
- Experience adapting to procedure and policy changes.
- Experience working in a dynamic environment.
- Experience using time management skills, such as prioritizing, organizing, tracking details, and meeting deadlines of multiple assignments.
- Experience communicating in writing and verbally with internal and external stakeholders.
- Experience learning and applying new processes.
- Experience representing an organization professionally to employees, external contacts, and the public.
- Knowledge of Microsoft Office applications.
- Advanced level skill in Microsoft Excel, including use of functions, pivot tables, and lookup tools.
- Experience using an iPhone.
- Experience with technical writing.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in waste approvals.
- Knowledge of database tools, including SQL queries.
- Knowledge of CCMS.
- Knowledge of Waste Linq.
Work Environment
- Work is performed primarily indoors.
- The position may require sitting or standing for long periods and may include field work in specific situations.

Pay
The anticipated salary range for this position is $57,000.00 - $69,000.00.
