About the Role
This position involves designing low, high, and extra-high voltage electrical power systems with a focus on transmission and distribution substations. The Associate Engineer will collaborate with a team of engineers and drafters to support substation engineering design projects, including detailed electrical and physical design, as well as providing engineering and construction support.
Responsibilities
- Apply practical knowledge of Engineering/Procurement/Construction (EPC) project types.
- Coordinate project flow and issues between engineering disciplines and project management.
- Provide engineering support to project management, procurement, and construction teams at all project stages.
- Collaborate with multi-discipline engineering teams to execute substation and transmission projects efficiently.
- Develop single-line switching and protection diagrams.
- Create equipment specifications and support procurement, including vendor interactions and equipment reviews.
- Develop three-line and DC schematic diagrams.
- Maintain a bill of materials.
- Develop cable and conduit schedules, including sizing.
- Conduct required calculations and create reports for AC/DC systems, including DC battery sizing, overvoltage protection, conduit fill, grounding, and lightning protection.
- Develop control panel layouts and wiring diagrams; select protective devices and ratings.
- Review and coordinate substation physical drawings and calculations, including general arrangements, clearances, details, conduit, grounding, and lightning protection.
- Design underground MV and HV cabling systems, including cable ampacity and installation details.
- Coordinate design with clients, vendors, and subcontractors, including attending meetings.
- Ensure proper maintenance of all engineering documents and records.
- Coordinate with purchasing and quality control personnel.
- Provide guidance to designers/drafters and conduct detailed reviews/approvals of electrical drawings.
- Understand unique requirements and constraints of various project types, including engineering-only, EPC, utility, renewable, industrial, and commercial projects.
- Participate in the development of less experienced engineers and designers.
Requirements
- Bachelor of Science Degree in Electrical Engineering and/or Electrical Power Engineering.
- Educational background in power systems analysis, electrical machinery, and related fields.
- Knowledge of NEC, ANSI, NEMA, IEEE, and other applicable codes and standards.
- 2+ years of experience in the design of transmission-level substations (13.8kV – 500 kV), including:
- Transmission line protection.
- Substation protection and control systems.
- Generator, transformer, and bus protection schemes.
- Development of station/substation single-line, protection, control, and SCADA diagrams, including utility and ISO interconnection and operational requirements.
- Equipment specifications, designs, and layouts for major equipment, protection, control, SCADA, and low-voltage auxiliary systems.
- Capacitor banks and distribution feeder protection.
- Demonstrated experience at all interfaces of transmission-level projects.
- Experience with SEL, GE, and other relays.
- Familiarity with codes and standards: NEC, NFPA, NESC, OSHA, NERC, RUS, IEEE, ANSI, IEC, and local/federal building codes.
- Familiarity with and review of substation physical drawings and calculations, including general arrangements, clearances, details, conduit, grounding, and lightning protection.
- Highly motivated with the ability to execute tasks with adequate supervision.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to work well in a team setting.
- Skilled in engineering theories and principles.
- Proficient in researching engineering and design issues, evaluating alternatives, making sound recommendations, and preparing/presenting them.
- Skilled in problem-solving in time-sensitive situations.
Skills
- Microsoft Word – Intermediate proficiency.

- AutoCAD (2015 or later) – Intermediate proficiency.

Qualifications
- Engineer in Training (EIT) certification is preferable but not required.
Travel
Travel is typically 10% for this role.
