About the Role

Black & Veatch is seeking a Power System Studies Engineer with 1-4 years’ experience to join our Power System Studies team. The ideal candidate has a strong understanding of Transmission System design concepts and analyses, including Transmission Interconnection Studies, Reactive Power Compensation, Short Circuit (Fault) Analysis, Circuit Breaker Rating Analysis, and system modeling software.

Responsibilities

  • Continues to learn and remains current on departmental design guides, standards, systems, applicable engineering codes, and Black & Veatch policies and procedures.
  • Applies knowledge independently to assigned tasks and supports continuous improvement and change management efforts.
  • Prepares a variety of increasingly complex engineering deliverables and performs research for equipment/materials selection.
  • Collects, assimilates, and manages data for engineering work; prepares complex engineering calculations following standard methods and principles.
  • Understands and adheres to budget, schedule, and quality requirements; may recognize, define, and resolve problems within assigned area.
  • Assigns tasks to develop entry-level professionals and interns; coordinates with project leadership and other internal/external team members on less complex projects.
  • Interacts with other disciplines on design details and works to understand external client interests and drivers through regular communication.
  • Provides support to business development or pursuit activities and shares knowledge of the latest technology and processes.
  • Assists with performance management, mentors entry-level professionals and interns, and contributes to team collaboration and client coordination.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in engineering from a recognized accredited program.
  • Minimum of 1 year of related work experience.
  • Ability to complete pre-employment onboarding requirements, including background checks, drug screening, and motor vehicle records search.

Qualifications

  • 1-4 years of experience in performing Transmission and System Analysis Studies.
  • Understanding of basic Transmission System design concepts, analyses, and calculations.
  • Experience performing studies such as Transmission Interconnection Studies, Reactive Power Compensation, Short Circuit (Fault) Analysis, and Circuit Breaker Rating Analysis.
  • Experience with system modeling software (e.g., PSS/E, PSLF, PSCAD, TARA, TSAT, PSAT) and familiarity with others.
  • Knowledge of power system studies supporting Transmission system design (e.g., TRV, TOV, Insulation Coordination).
  • Familiarity with NERC standards (e.g., TPL, MOD, PRC) and ISOs (e.g., PJM, ERCOT, MISO, SPP, CAISO, ISO-NE, NYISO).
  • Familiarity with analytics and scripting (e.g., Python).
  • Ability to develop written communication independently and facilitate coordination with team members and clients.
  • Ability to work cooperatively in a team environment.
  • Engineering-in-Training (EIT) Certification (preferred).

Pay

Final compensation is determined based on skills, experience, qualifications, internal alignment, geographic location, and other factors permitted by law.

  • State of Colorado: $91,047–$152,053
  • State of Minnesota: $86,909–$145,142

Schedule

  • Full-time role.
  • Hybrid or flexible work options may be offered after the first 90 days of employment based on manager discretion, job performance, and work assignments.
