As the Associate Environmental, Health, and Safety (EHS) Manager, you will play a crucial role in shaping and executing our worker safety and health policies, environmental compliance programs, and site security measures.
You will leverage your expertise in workers’ compensation laws, OSHA regulations, and federal, state, and local environmental standards. You will also provide valuable support to our facility’s ISO certification efforts, ensuring adherence to both ISO 14001 (Environmental Management) and ISO 45001 (Occupational Health and Safety).

What You'll Do
- Compliance and Program Maintenance: Support safety and environmental programs, ensuring alignment with regulatory, compliance, and company standards. Maintain the Environmental Management System (EMS) and Smithfield Injury Prevention System (SIPS), and contribute to internal EHS audits.
- Environmental, Health and Safety Metrics: Collect and analyze Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) for EHS, including OSHA/environmental violations, incident rates, employee turnover, and workers’ compensation claims. Implement strategies to track and reduce workers’ compensation costs, absenteeism, and turnover.
- Training: Ensure training is conducted as required by regulatory and Smithfield EHS systems. Train production employees and management on OSHA, environmental regulations, SOPs, and emergency response protocols.
- Incident and Audit Management: Help ensure thorough incident investigations are completed, identify and implement corrective actions, and assist with employee exposure surveys.
- Leadership: Drive a positive employee experience through leadership by way of employee development and coaching.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree from an accredited four-year college or university in environmental, health and safety or related field and 3+ years relevant experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience, required.
- Experience acting as a lead by providing training, coaching or mentoring to less experienced staff or through managing a process or project.
- Seasoned at handling multiple assignments simultaneously, setting goals, and completing commitments on schedule.
- Comfortable with, at times, working long hours, weekends, and remaining in an on-call status when required.
- Ability to make strategic decisions while in stressful situations including leading emergency response efforts.
- Thrive in collaborating in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.
Physical Demands & Work Environment
- Wet or humid conditions (non-weather related), extreme cold and heat (non-weather related), working near moving mechanical parts, exposure to fumes or airborne particles, and chemicals.
- Frequent standing, walking, using stairs, some ladder climbing, reaching with hands and arms, stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling, talking or hearing.
- Occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
- Indoor and outdoor work environments.
- Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
- Frequent noise levels in the work environment are usually moderate but can be loud when in the production area.
