Associate Director of Statistical Programming
About the Role
The Center for Biostatistics in AIDS Research (CBAR), an organization within the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, is responsible for the design, monitoring, and statistical analysis of clinical trials and observational studies for several major national and international NIH-funded clinical research networks. CBAR employs over 60 statisticians and epidemiologists, including Harvard faculty, research scientists, and staff. This position is located in CBAR within the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health in Boston, Massachusetts, and offers a hybrid work environment combining on-campus and remote work.
Responsibilities
- Lead statistical programming efforts for a busy research center, collaborating with CBAR Leadership, project PIs, biostatisticians, Core programmers, the CBAR Quality Management Team, IT professionals, and external collaborators.
- Continuously improve programming processes to conform to evolving industry standards, including CDISC implementation, R programming, AI integration, and other initiatives.
- Manage priorities and expectations of the CBAR Programming Core (approximately 10 programmers) who design and implement expert applications (SAS macros, R packages, BASH scripts) supporting protocol-specific statistical programming for ACTG and IMPAACT networks.
- Serve as process owner for Core Applications, including timely review and final approval of program specifications and requirements.
- Directly supervise programming managers and senior Core programming staff, including hiring, promotion recommendations, and disciplinary actions.
- Mentor programming staff and coordinate training needs with the CBAR Training Committee for master’s and doctoral-level statisticians and epidemiologists.
- Act as signatory for CBAR Programming SOPs, handling document revisions, CAPA management, and responses to internal/external audits.
- Manage Programming Core priorities, including resource allocation for ad-hoc projects and review of program specifications.
- Oversee a pipeline of statistical programming projects, including macro/script development, study-specific work, standardization efforts, and ad-hoc projects.
- Collaborate with the CBAR IT team to ensure thorough testing of critical hardware and software updates.
- Serve as primary liaison with the ACTG/IMPAACT Data Management Center to harmonize programming systems and deliverables.
- Support statisticians and epidemiologists with external collaborators to ensure efficient and secure data transfer.
- Coordinate with the CBAR Training Committee regarding training needs for statisticians and epidemiologists.
Requirements
- Minimum of 7 years’ post-secondary education or relevant work experience.
- Supervisory experience is required.
- Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree in Mathematics, Statistics, Computer Science, or a related field.
- Proven leadership skills with prior management and extensive supervisory experience.
- At least seven years of high-level statistical programming skills in a clinical data environment or research setting, preferably with clinical trial data.
- Proven skills in the use of SAS and a scripting language within a Statistical Programming environment (knowledge of R is highly desirable).
- Experience with CDISC SDTM and ADaM standards to support statistical analysis.
- Experience with SAS, R, Bash, Linux, and Python is highly desirable.
- Strong team player with a customer service approach and solution-oriented mindset.
- Attention to detail and ability to work individually, within multi-disciplinary teams, and with external partners.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills; technical writing experience is desirable.

Schedule
- 35 hours per week.
- Hybrid work environment with a combination of on-campus and remote work.
- Term appointment ending November 30, 2027, with a strong likelihood of extension.
