Associate Director of Health Care-Safety Director

Responsibilities

Under the direction of the Chief Operating Officer, the Safety Director will have broad latitude to exercise independent judgment for the areas of Life Safety, Fire Safety, Hazardous Materials & Waste, and Emergency Preparedness. In addition, as Chairperson of Environment of Care, will oversee the committee and manage Biomedical Engineering, Linen, and Environmental Services departments. Perform administrative and managerial functions related to the department. Develop, implement, and coordinate new programs and projects and monitor their operations and effectiveness.

• Chair the Environment of Care Committee, managing the meeting, preparing the agenda and minutes.
• Chair the Emergency Management Committee, preparing the agenda and minutes, and responsible for planning, prioritizing, coordinating, and executing hospital-wide Emergency Preparedness programs to enhance the overall capacity and capability of the hospital.
• Manage Joint Commission Preparedness and Inspection of the Environment of Care standard.
• Manage Joint Commission Preparedness and Inspection of the Life Safety standard.
• Manage Joint Commission Preparedness and inspection of the Emergency Management standard.
• Manage the buildings preparedness for FDNY inspections.
• Manage regulatory compliance with NFPA standards.
• Manage the Fire Safety Directors 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
• Manage the Environment of Care Rounding Team, including managing supporting documentation.
• Manage the Interim Life Safety Program, including inspections and supporting documentation.
• Manage the Fire Safety Program to include Fire Drills, Fire Extinguisher Inspections, Fire Safety In-Service, Fire Evacuation training, New Occupancy Training, and Fire Door inspections.
• Manage the Hazardous Materials and Waste Program, including the waste streams from Regulated Medical Waste, Hazardous Chemical Waste, Amalgam Waste, Radiological Waste, Film Waste, Lead Aprons Waste, and Universal Waste. This includes handling, storage, and shipping of waste.
• Manage the Manifest for shipping of waste for regulatory compliance.
• Manage Spill training for all staff that handle Hazardous Chemicals.
• Manage, respond to, clean up, store, and ship out Hazardous Chemical Spills.
• Provide New Employee orientation for the Environment of Care.
• Maintain and update the Emergency Operations Plan and HVA, based upon the framework of the four phases of emergency preparedness: Mitigation, Preparedness, Response, and Recovery.
• Conduct annual evaluation for the Emergency Management Program.
• Work with departments to assist in the development of specific emergency plans that will support the hospital’s emergency response and recovery efforts and ensure a 96-hour sustainability of hospital operations with adequate supplies such as food, water, medications, medical supplies, and fuel.
• Manage and collect information for dissemination related to the Emergency Management Program and respond to emergency management-related surveys, including HERDS.
• Keep current data on trends and regulations and communicate changes to appropriate staff members and leadership.
• Conduct emergency exercises and drills, perform and prepare after-action reports and improvement plans for emergency incidents and/or exercises, drills. Communicate findings to relevant departments and follow up with departments on identified deficiencies.

Requirements

• Master’s degree from an accredited college or university in Hospital, Health, Public or Business Administration, Healthcare Management, Public Health, or a related discipline; and four (4) years of full-time, paid progressively responsible experience in hospital administration with an emphasis on the development and evaluation of health care delivery services.
• Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in disciplines as listed above; and five (5) years of full-time, paid experience in hospital administration with an emphasis on the development and evaluation of health care delivery services.
