About the role

Develops and implements programs and services to support the career success of undergraduate and graduate students enrolled in the Greenberg School of Risk Management degree and certificate programs in risk management and actuarial science disciplines within The Peter J. Tobin College of Business.

Responsibilities

  • Provide one-on-one career coaching and advising to GSRM students and alumni; includes educating students on careers in the insurance and risk industries; reviewing and polishing resumes, cover letters and other correspondence; improvement of interview techniques and practice interviewing; decision-making regarding employment offers; strategies to negotiate employment offers; networking; researching potential employers; self-marketing, developing on-line presence through LinkedIn and other social networks; and developing a job search plan in the interest of supporting students’ experiential education opportunities and job placement success.
  • Proactively explore and pursue internship and employment opportunities on behalf of GSRM students; maintain regular follow-up with employer contacts to develop business relationships; Increase number and scope of participating employers annually to assure optimal outcome rate for GSRM students.
  • Participate in professional networking opportunities in the insurance and risk industry and financial services sector to develop contacts and explore industry pathways to lead to increased outcomes and opportunities for job development.
  • Manage a caseload of 1st Year and Sophomore students and internships/jobs with specific responsibility for referring and placing students. Follow-up with employers for feedback on reviewed or placed students and final outcomes to populate Center reports and inform programming.
  • Serve as primary administrative advisor for GSRM’s Alpha Iota Chapter of Gamma Iota Sigma (GIS) National Fraternity, working closely with student officers and members, faculty advisor/s and industry to advise on membership development, election planning, insurance industry and leadership conference attendance and planning, and case competition preparations to achieve coordination of career development-oriented programming and initiatives.
  • Develop and facilitate semesterly programming to engage alumni, students and industry professionals including fire side chats, networking and career development focused events.
  • Aid Global Destination Course Faculty and Dean with the planning of insurance industry related company visits abroad as well as general trip organization and student support.
  • Actively monitor student progress toward outcome goals; conduct follow-up during their apprenticeship/internship experience.
  • Develop and facilitate outreach/marketing strategies, including electronic media campaigns using advances in technology, social media and web-based means, to students, faculty, staff and employers to elevate and promote the Thrower Center and GSRM brand.
  • Assist in developing and coordinating special career events such as career fairs, on-site and mock interviews, corporate presentations and career days.
  • Utilize multiple web-based platforms and resources to develop opportunities, expand employer relationships and support student use and engagement with same.
  • Communicate with students effectively through email, class presentations, etc. to promote program offerings, explain policies and procedures, and furnish information regarding specific opportunities.
  • Represent the GSRM and Thrower Center on all University campuses for various activities and events; maintain office hours on the Queens and Manhattan campuses regularly as scheduled.
  • Represent the GSRM and Thrower Center to prospective students, alumni and other internal and external parties. Participate in internal and external student recruitment initiatives.
  • Maintain accurate records of all activities and appointments; assist in tracking of graduation outcomes data for annual outcomes report.
  • Cook up mentor, job shadow and other programs as assigned including the GSRM Alumni Mentoring Program, assist with recruiting mentors and mentees, providing oversight and advisement for matching and assessment/follow-up.
  • Conduct presentations at corporate locations, academic forums, special events and gatherings of industry professional associations, to represent and promote GSRM and the ETCACS.
  • Participate in various programs and activities of the GSRM, including special events, open houses, alumni reunions, career fairs, and recruitment campaigns as identified/assigned.

Requirements

  • A Master’s degree is required or advanced study in higher education, student services, counseling or business-related area
  • 5+ years professional experience in recruiting, career counseling/services, outplacement, human resources, business development, higher education administration or related field

Qualifications

  • Evidence of strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Evidence of strong interpersonal skills, relationship building, and capable use of Microsoft Office suite, social media platforms and database programs

$83,600.00 - $94,050.00 annual
