Associate Dean Performing Arts and Finance

About the Role
SLCC’s Associate Deans are primarily responsible for shaping a division’s success, growth, and future. They have a direct influence over the professional growth and development of individual faculty and students. The work and effort of effective Associate Deans transcends routine management tasks. Associate Deans must clarify, communicate, and implement the department’s vision, mission, guiding principles, goals, and expectations. Acting as the primary spokesperson for assigned faculty and students, Associate Deans work with the College administration, peer institutions, the community, and prospective students in the critical areas of curriculum development, recruitment, and retention. They must proactively facilitate professional teamwork among faculty members to achieve the desired vision and mission.
Responsibilities
- Provide leadership, support, and supervision for department or division faculty and staff.
- Manage the department or division in compliance with SLCC’s policies, procedures, guidelines, and direction.
- Help the division faculty establish an appropriate vision and goals tied to SLCC’s mission, including the ethical, critical, and responsible use of emerging AI technologies and ADA accessibility standards.
- Coordinate faculty and staff efforts to achieve goals aligned with SLCC’s mission and strategic plan.
- Address faculty, staff, and student issues collaboratively with other college departments and administrators.
- Assist the dean in developing and modifying programs to promote student learning outcomes and program effectiveness, including:
- Collecting and utilizing survey and student interest data.
- Preparing and coordinating articulation agreements.
- Implementing Concurrent Enrollment processes.
- Coordinating transfer information and facility utilization.
- Initiate, plan, and oversee implementation of academic offerings in the division or department.
- Take a leading role in defining and achieving academic program and course quality, including assessment of student learning outcomes.
- Serve on the school AD Council, Curriculum Committee, and Student Learning Outcomes Assessment Committee.
- Assist with department and College-wide evaluations for agencies such as the Board of Regents and the Northwest Association of Colleges and Universities.
- Ensure inter-departmental/inter-division coordination and communication.
- Meet with department or division members regularly to ensure coordination and dissemination of information.
- Collaborate with community partners, industry professionals, and external organizations, including the Utah System of Higher Education.
- Ensure the class schedule meets students’ needs while being fiscally responsible and efficient.
- Support the exploration and improvement of learning modalities and delivery methods, including distance learning and classroom technologies.
- Ensure the College catalog is accurate, well-written, and current.
- Maintain an inventory of current course syllabi and ensure compliance with syllabi requirements.
- Apply College personnel policy and procedure to personnel matters within the department or division.
- Coordinate and approve compensation within guidelines in the Faculty Handbook and other College policies.
- Resolve faculty and staff grievances, concerns, and problems using College policy and procedure.
- Evaluate the professional activities of division or department members, including guidance on professional growth, evaluation, and tenure.
- Participate in the tenure process as described in policy.
- Assist with faculty recruitment, appointments, promotion, sabbatical leave, and retention.
- Hire, orient, train, supervise, and discipline adjunct instructors.
- Serve as liaison for the department or division, especially for students, ensuring the AD’s office is attended during regular business hours.
- Coordinate with Student Services to provide appropriate advisement and consultation for students.
- Participate in admission processes for selective programs and help adjudicate student grievances.
- Promote successful student transfer, job placement, and cooperative education placement.
- Monitor department inventory, supplies, and capital equipment.
- Prepare and maintain a department or division budget.
- Coordinate budget processes and initiate budget requests with justifications.
- Maintain fiscal control of department budgets in compliance with College policy and state statutes.
- Assist with grant development opportunities, including Carl Perkins Grants.
- Facilitate ordering of necessary equipment and supplies.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Master's degree in a related field required.
- Three years of full-time successful teaching experience.
- Significant and productive participation in department-level processes such as scheduling, program review, curriculum development, and student issues.
- Demonstrated understanding of student learning outcomes assessment principles and practices.
Preferred Qualifications
- Demonstrated experience with academic budgeting practices.
- Three or more years of prior academic administration experience in a comparable position.
- Terminal degree in a related field.
