About the role

United Way of New York City (UWNYC) seeks a dynamic communications professional to support the organization's media relations, executive communications, thought leadership, and storytelling initiatives. Reporting to the Associate Vice President, Communications, the Associate, Communications will help create compelling content that elevates UWNYC's mission, strengthens brand awareness, and highlights the organization's impact across New York City. This role partners with internal teams and external stakeholders to develop strategic communications, support executive visibility, manage media opportunities, and ensure consistent messaging across internal and external channels.

Responsibilities

  • Draft and edit press releases, pitch letters, executive communications, blog content, speeches, talking points, and other written materials.
  • Develop compelling stories that highlight UWNYC's mission, partnerships, and community impact.
  • Support media outreach, reporter engagement, and responses to media inquiries.
  • Prepare briefing documents, background materials, and speaking points for executives and organizational spokespeople.
  • Aid in implementing integrated communications and thought leadership strategies that strengthen UWNYC's brand.
  • Research communications trends and identify opportunities to elevate the organization's visibility and reputation.
  • Partner with departments across the organization to develop strategic internal and external communications.
  • Cook up communications support for media events, leadership appearances, and community events.
  • Maintain communications assets, media lists, content libraries, and reporting dashboards.
  • Track communications metrics and media coverage to evaluate campaign performance and organizational reach.

Qualifications

  • Passion for UWNYC's mission and a commitment to advancing equity and opportunity for all New Yorkers.
  • Bachelor's degree in Communications, Public Relations, Journalism, Marketing, or a related field required.
  • Three to five years of professional experience in communications, public relations, marketing, or media relations preferred.
  • Exceptional writing, editing, proofreading, and storytelling skills with strong attention to detail.
  • Demonstrated ability to translate complex information into concise, engaging content for diverse audiences.
  • Strong organizational and project management skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines.
  • Excellent interpersonal and collaboration skills with experience working across cross-functional teams.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and familiarity with social media and digital communications platforms.
  • Experience with Canva, Mailchimp, SharePoint, content management systems, or similar communications tools is preferred.
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, collaborative, mission-driven environment.
