Associate Civil/Geotechnical Engineer (Mine Waste)

WSP is currently initiating a search for an Associate Civil/Geotechnical Engineer to join the Mine Waste team in our Lakewood, CO office (Anchorage, AK, Madison, WI, and St. Louis, MO will also be considered).

About the role

Be involved in projects with our US Mine Waste Team and be part of a growing organization that meets our client’s objectives and solves their challenges. In this role, you will work as part of a regional team on challenging mining, heavy civil, and geotechnical projects.

Responsibilities

• Work on civil and geotechnical engineering projects for the mining industry, including Tailings Storage Facilities (TSF), Heap Leach Pads, and Waste Rock facilities, with opportunities to work on projects in other industries.
• Perform geotechnical field investigations and construction monitoring.
• Conduct site and material characterization.
• Design facilities including grading, storage capacity, and construction quantity evaluations.
• Perform slope stability, seepage, consolidation, liner system, and settlement analyses.
• Manage process fluid and water balance.
• Design and analyze surface water management facilities.
• Develop reclamation and closure designs.
• Prepare portions of technical reports documenting field and laboratory investigations, engineering analyses, and facility designs.
• Assist with the preparation of project design packages including technical drawings, specifications, schedules, and cost estimates.
• Perform domestic and international field assignments.
• Work with cross-functional teams in executing project work.
• Comply with safety guidelines and site-specific procedures, including location data, statistical documentation, engineering studies, surveys, and construction.
• Exercise responsible and ethical decision-making regarding company funds, resources, and conduct, and adhere to WSP’s Code of Conduct and related policies and procedures.
• Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs.

Requirements

• A bachelor’s degree in civil or geotechnical engineering or an equivalent field of study.
• 1 to 3 years of relevant post-education experience.
• Successful completion of the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam or the ability to complete the exam within 6 months of start date.
• Strong analytical skills, including the ability to complete engineering calculations and analyses.
• Ability to work both independently and on teams.
• Comfortable working in remote settings.
• Commitment to participating in and promoting a safety-first culture.
• Ability and willingness to travel both domestically and internationally.
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills when interacting with others, expressing ideas effectively and professionally to engineering and non-engineering audiences.
• Proficiency with technical writing, office automation, software, technology, math principles, predictive models, spreadsheets, and tools.
• Capable self-leadership with attention to detail, accuracy, multi-tasking, and prioritization of responsibilities in a dynamic work environment.
• Ability to work independently with minimal supervision, as well as part of a team to meet business objectives.
• Proven track record of upholding workplace safety and ability to abide by WSP’s health, safety, and drug/alcohol and harassment policies.
• Ability to work schedules conducive to project-specific requirements that may differ from the typical workweek.

Preferred Qualifications

• A master’s degree in civil or geotechnical engineering or an equivalent field of study.
• Engineer in Training Certification.
• Familiarity with discipline-specific design software (e.g., AutoCAD, Civil 3D, ArcGIS, GeoStudio, Muk3D, Rocscience/Slide 2D).
• Membership and/or active participation in local professional practice organizations.

Pay

Expected salary (Colorado only): $67,600 - $95,200.
