Associate Attorney

About the Role

Our client, a leading international law firm, is seeking an Insurance Coverage Associate with 3-5 years of experience to join its growing insurance coverage practice in California. This opportunity is ideal for an attorney interested in sophisticated coverage analysis and litigation involving a broad range of liability insurance products. The successful candidate will work closely with domestic and international insurers on complex coverage matters while enjoying significant client contact, hands-on responsibility, and strong opportunities for professional development.

Responsibilities

• Advise domestic and international insurers regarding coverage issues arising under a variety of liability policies, including:
  • Directors & Officers (D&O)
  • Employment Practices Liability (EPL)
  • Professional Liability
  • Commercial General Liability (CGL)
  • Commercial Auto Liability
• Analyze policy language and evaluate coverage obligations and defenses
• Draft coverage opinions, reservation of rights letters, denial letters, and other coverage-related correspondence
• Conduct legal research and prepare detailed memoranda on insurance coverage issues
• Draft pleadings, motions, briefs, discovery requests, and discovery responses
• Review and analyze documents and materials produced during litigation and investigations
• Participate in depositions, mediations, arbitrations, hearings, and other proceedings
• Develop litigation and claim-handling strategies
• Communicate regularly with insurer clients and insureds regarding case developments and risk assessments
• Assist with trial preparation and participate in mediations and trials as needed
• Manage multiple matters and deadlines in a fast-paced environment

Qualifications

• J.D. from an accredited law firm
• Active membership in good standing with the California Bar
• 3-5 years of insurance coverage experience
• Experience analyzing and advising on complex insurance coverage matters
• Strong legal research, writing, analytical, and oral advocacy skills
• Excellent organizational and project management abilities
• Ability to independently manage multiple sensitive and time-sensitive matters
• Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail
• Ability to work effectively within a collaborative team environment

Preferred Qualifications

• Litigation experience
• Experience representing insurance carriers in coverage disputes
• Additional state bar admissions are a plus
• Experience handling complex liability insurance matters
