Associate Attorney

Hawkins Parnell & Young LLP is seeking an Associate Attorney with 3-6 years of experience for its Chicago office.

About the role

You will have the opportunity to participate in all stages of cases and make court appearances as part of a team of seasoned attorneys handling toxic tort cases and civil litigation.

Responsibilities

• Manage a caseload of litigated claims by preparing them for trial, including developing case-specific defense strategies
• Attend depositions, hearings, and/or mediations
• Analyze discovery, medical records, expert defense strategy, and motion practice
• Research legal issues and investigate people, businesses, and worksites
• Draft briefs, memos, and client updates
• Draft critical motions and written discovery
• Take and defend depositions
• Participate in pretrial motions and discovery disputes

Requirements

• Actively licensed and in good standing with the State of Illinois
• 3–6 years’ experience in defense litigation (toxic tort experience a plus)
• Substantial deposition experience
• Ability to thrive in a high-paced environment, requiring exceptional organizational skills, juggling priorities, and adhering to strict deadlines
• Client-focused mentality
• Self-starter who can handle multiple projects with competing priorities and understand the importance of deadlines
• Ability to work flexibly and independently within a strong team
