Beeson, Tayer & Bodine is a progressive, 15-attorney law firm dedicated to championing unions, workers, and benefit plans since 1936. With offices in Oakland and Sacramento, we represent public and private-sector unions, educators, employee benefit plans, and individual employees across the full spectrum of union-side labor and employment law.

We currently have two open positions for an Associate Attorney: one in our Sacramento office focusing on our Labor & Employment practice, and a second focusing on our Education practice, open in either our Oakland or Sacramento office. Both are available to start immediately.

About the role

We are looking for a motivated self-starter with excellent judgment, strong communication skills, and the ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment while managing a caseload independently. Ideal candidates will have 2-10 years of experience and must be admitted to the California Bar. In addition to a strong academic background, superior writing, and superior oral advocacy skills, applicants must share our commitment to the labor and worker's rights movements. While union-side experience is a plus, we also welcome applicants with backgrounds in plaintiffs’ employment law or public interest work.

Responsibilities

Labor & Employment Practice

  • Advise and represent clients on a broad range of workplace matters, including collective bargaining, grievance and arbitration proceedings, unfair labor practice charges, wage and hour compliance, and employment discrimination and retaliation claims.
  • Represent clients before administrative agencies such as the NLRB, PERB, EEOC, and DLSE, as well as in state and federal court litigation.

Education Practice

  • Represent California Teachers Association members in a variety of legal matters, including Education Code disciplinary actions before the Office of Administrative Hearings, credentialing matters before the Commission on Teacher Credentialing, and disputes with employer Districts regarding issues of pay, classification, disability accommodation, layoffs, leaves, transfers, and tort claims.
  • Provide advice and counsel on a wide range of other employment-related issues to members directly.
  • Handle the intake and management of approximately 20-30 cases per month.

Requirements

  • J.D. from an ABA-accredited law school.
  • Active membership in good standing with the California Bar.
  • Completion of labor and employment law coursework.
  • 2-10 years of experience (union-side experience is a plus, but we also welcome applicants with backgrounds in plaintiffs’ employment law or public interest work).

Benefits

  • Employer-paid family medical, dental, and vision coverage.
  • Profit sharing.
  • 401(k) match.
  • Student loan assistance.
  • Commute support.
  • Monthly $50 work-from-home subsidy.

Pay

For attorneys with 3-5 years of experience, the salary range is $113,000-$125,000, depending on office.

Schedule

Three in-office days and two remote days each week.

As part of our commitment to workplace democracy, our associate attorneys have recently organized and ratified their first collective bargaining agreement.
