Assistant Vice President, Ports and Marine Engineering
About the role
This opportunity is for an Assistant Vice President, Ports and Marine Engineering position within WSP USA's National Maritime Practice Group. The position can be based in Irvine, San Francisco, San Diego-CA, Miami-FL, Portland-OR, Houston-TX, and Tampa-FL.
Responsibilities
- Provides technical support and leadership for port, marine, and intermodal rail terminal projects.
- Supervises technical staff, engineers, and task leads.
- Mentors staff for growth and professional development.
- Prepares and oversees calculations, cost estimates, drawings, technical specifications, and reports/studies.
- Tracks progress of milestone activities and manages PS&E submissions.
- Assists with engineering reviews of permit applications.
- Performs quality assurance/quality control checks for marine facility projects.
- Prepares alternatives analysis reports and presentations.
- Manages cross-functional teams on large-scale and concurrent projects.
- Manages project schedules, budgets, and profitability.
- Manages subcontractors, contracts, and employees.
- Leads review meetings, client presentations, and design charrettes.
- Prepares technical proposals and presentations.
- Participates in client interviews and scope negotiations.
- Develops a client base for marine, port, and coastal engineering services.
- Maintains current in latest marine, port, and coastal engineering techniques and practices.
- Maintains workplace safety and abides by WSP’s health, safety, and drug/alcohol and harassment policies.
- Works independently to provide guidance and leadership to team or project members.
- Provides critical review of submittals and prepares technical deliverables.
- Applies technical knowledge to planning and engineering processes.
- Upholds workplace safety and abides by WSP’s health, safety, and drug/alcohol and harassment policies.
- Works schedules conducive to project-specific requirements.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering from ABET accredited program.
- 10+ years of relevant post-education experience in engineering with marine and coastal design experience.
- Professional Engineering license required (multi-state preferred) or ability to obtain within 6 months of employment.
- Demonstrated proficiency in completing technical computations/calculations, involving engineering principles to ports and marine structures.
- Proficient in technical writing, engineering software and tools, and engineering fundamentals including statics and logical problem-solving.
- Highly proficient in AutoCAD, REVIT, and SAP2000 and similar tools.
- Demonstrated ability in design/build processes.
- Demonstrated ability to plan, conduct, and lead site inspections/investigations.
- Demonstrated aptitude in maritime related codes (ASCE, COPRI, etc.) and Department of Defense (UFC, UFGC) criteria.
- Demonstrated ability to interact with others, express ideas effectively and professionally to an engineering and non-engineering audience.
- Demonstrated ability in building and infrastructure planning, design, and construction management.
- Demonstrated well-developed critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
- Proven track record of upholding workplace safety and abiding by WSP’s health, safety, and drug/alcohol and harassment policies.
- Ability to work schedules conducive to project-specific requirements.
- Occasional travel may be required depending on project-specific requirements.
- Ability to obtain a Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) card which requires a TSA background check.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master’s Degree in Engineering from ABET accredited program.
- Structural Engineering license.
- Key member and active participant of national professional practice organization.
- Ability to obtain a Defense Biometric Identification System (DBIDS) background check for access onto U.S. Navy facilities.
Benefits
WSP offers a comprehensive suite of benefits including medical, dental, vision, disability, life, and retirement savings. Compensation ranges from $100,000 to $180,000, with the final amount contingent on the successful applicant’s qualifications and experience.
