Assistant Vice President, Mechanical Design Engineer
About the role
This Opportunity WSP is currently initiating a search for an Assistant Vice President, Mechanical Design Engineer for our Boston, MA office location to help us continue to develop our Property & Buildings office. This is an exciting opportunity for a licensed Mechanical Engineer with deep expertise in HVAC system design, particularly for complex healthcare and commercial environments in the state of MA.
Responsibilities
- Cook up, review, and approve HVAC design plans with a focus on system efficiency, air quality, thermal comfort, and energy performance, ensuring all work complies with applicable codes and standards.
- Apply high-level mechanical and HVAC engineering techniques to identify improvements for concept development, load calculations, system sizing, final design, and building operations.
- Plan and design future-ready HVAC technologies, including energy-efficient systems, heat recovery, decarbonization strategies, and advanced control systems that enhance operational performance and occupant wellbeing.
- Involve from project inception to completion in the design and construction administration of heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning systems, including chilled water systems, air handling units, central utility plants, and specialized ventilation.
- Work with cross-functional teams of engineers to execute HVAC project design work on mid-level and/or multiple concurrent projects, including, tracking hours, task completion, system calculations, compliance documentation, and technical analysis.
- Prepare data and visualizations such as HVAC load calculation spreadsheets, system diagrams, airflow schematics, pressure relationships, reports, sketches, cross-sections, and other illustrations for interpretation or presentation of technical data.
- Prepare comprehensive technical reports and presentations that explain HVAC system concepts, analyses, recommendations, and design solutions for addressing client needs and design challenges.
- Develop relationships with key internal and external stakeholders, including equipment vendors, contractors, and design partners.
- Exercise responsible and ethical decision-making regarding adhering to WSP’s Code of Conduct and related policies and procedures.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Architectural Engineering, or related degree.
- 10+ years of relevant post-education experience with a strong emphasis on HVAC system design, engineering calculations, and mechanical system integration.
- Professional Engineering license required.
- Extensive knowledge of HVAC design methodologies including ASHRAE standards, FGI Guidelines, and advanced ventilation principles.
- Proficient with HVAC engineering principles, design/bid and design/build project workflows, and understanding permitting design packages and project execution.
- Experience with HVAC planning, design, and construction administration, including renovation, new construction, and complex infrastructure upgrades.
- Well-defined knowledge of relevant mechanical codes, ventilation requirements, compliance practices, and general mechanical design regulations.
- Well-developed ability to perform mechanical calculations, HVAC load analyses, system sizing, and evaluation of plans and specifications for compliance and functionality.
- Proven track record of upholding workplace safety and ability to abide by WSP’s health, safety, drug/alcohol, and harassment policies.
Preferred Qualifications
- LEED AP or WELL Certification.
- Previous healthcare, laboratory, or clean-room HVAC design experience.
- 40-Hour OSHA Health & Safety Training (HAZWOPER) (29 CFR 1910.120) preferred.
- Basic First Aid and Adult CPR training desired.

Pay
Expected Salary (all locations): $138,100- $205,000
