Stanford University’s Department of Aeronautics and Astronautics invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position at the Assistant, untenured Associate Professor, or tenured Associate Professor level.
About the role
Recent advances in aerospace engineering—including zero-emission air transportation, autonomous air systems, AI-driven robotics, and next-generation space access—are driving a renaissance in the field. The department seeks exceptional applicants who will establish a high-impact research program, contribute to an innovative undergraduate curriculum, and develop graduate courses at the forefront of areas such as:
- Aerodynamics and fluid mechanics
- Aerospace system design
- Autonomous aerospace vehicle technologies
- Novel fuel, storage, and propulsion systems for sustainable aviation
- Human and robotic exploration of space
- Fundamental science and engineering across aerospace disciplines
Priority will be given to the impact, originality, and promise of the candidate’s work rather than the specific subfield within Aeronautics and Astronautics.
Responsibilities
- Pursue a program of high-impact research
- Teach graduate and undergraduate courses
- Build and lead a team of graduate students in PhD research
Requirements
- Ph.D. in Aeronautics and Astronautics or a closely related field (completed or near completion)
- Evidence of the ability to conduct independent research
- Strong commitment to graduate and undergraduate teaching

Pay
Expected base pay range for a nine-month academic appointment (summer salary not included):
- Assistant Professor: $144,100 – $163,766
- Associate Professor (untenured): $158,510 – $196,803
- Associate Professor (tenured): $168,510 – $206,803
Final pay will be determined based on experience, qualifications, internal equity, and market factors.
